Weekend Actuals: Don't breathe 26.4M, Squad 12.25M, Kubo 7.85M., Sausage 7.5M, Mechanic 7.5M, Dragon 7.4M, War Dogs 7M

Recommended Posts

Over the 4-day weekend I think most of the holdovers from this week will remain flat since they all held well this week. Maybe a 20% or more drop for Don't Breathe which would be great for horror movies. A lot depends on theater counts as well but doesn't seem like the openers are in more than 2000 theaters next week.

This shows your age actually (not saying this in a bad way at all). The marketing for Don't Breathe was more than 50% digital using all available social media platforms and very little traditional media like TV spots. I caught a lot of ads on Hulu of all places.

I usually rely on this to know a movie is coming

BOURNE (149.4) only 1.5m away from TREK (150.9) after a much bigger weekend (5.23 vs 2.24).

It was on track to catch up eventually but it did so fast and very easily.

~156 for TREK and ~164 for BOURNE I guess.

The power of late August competition. IMAX dependency withstanding, if Bourne and Trek were flipped in release date we could have saw Trek a bit ahead of Bourne right around this time. Bourne has done well aside from the poor 2nd weekend

Don't Breathe breaths high this weekend with a very good start for a horror film! While Mechanic:Ressurection, and Hands Of Stone flopped. Overall the top 12 was at $98.8 million which is up nearly 44% from last year!                                                                                 Don't Breathe led the weekend with better than expected numbers with an estimated $26.1 million. That debut is ahead of directed Fede Alvarez's last film Evil Dead($25.7 million). It is also around the same field as other late-August horror films such as Rob Zombie's Halloween($26.3 million) and The Final Destination(although debuted higher but in the same high range with $27.4 million). With solid word of mouth(86% of audiences liked it on Rotten Tomatoes,  B+ to an A- on Cinemascore) Don't Breathe should hold up fine for a horror film, and make north of $60 million domestic.                                                  Suicide Squad had a solid hold this weekend just around 42% drop at an estimated $12.1 million for the weekend. Suicide Squad should make at least close to $310 million by the end of its run.                         Kubo and the Two Strings also held up well with an estimated $7.9 million and a drop under 40% which is the average for a Laika film. Look for Kubo to end its run between $40-$45 million.                               Sausage Party had an alright drop around 50%, and should do fine in the weeks to come with the lack of R-rated comedies and make a $100 million domestic.                     Action sequel Mechanic Ressurection was shot down this weekend with a bleh estimated $7.5 million for the weekend. That debut is around the same field as the Statham-less sequel Transporter:Refueled. But slightly lower than late-August action films such as No Escape($8.8 million), and Hitman:Agent 47($8.3 million) from last August. As most Statham films usually die off and mixed word of mouth(a mediocre 52% by audiences on Rotten Tomatoes) The Mechanic should disappear quickly into the sunset. A total around $15-20 million seems reasonable.         Pete's Dragon and War Dogs weren't too far from each other in the 6th and 7th place spot this weekend both with an estimated $7.2 million for the weekend.           But Pete's Dragon had a much better hold around 36% for the weekend, look for Pete's Dragon to make at least $70 million domestic. War Dogs took a bland drop near 51% which is a better drop that director Todd Phillips last film The Hangover Part III(60%) and is also better than School For Scoundrels(also 60%). But worse than Superbad(45%). Overall look for War Dogs to make around $40 million domestic.                                  R-rated comedy Bad Moms still continues to hold strong this weekend with under 30% holds, and should over $110 million domestic. Jason Bourne also saw a decent hold, and should make around $160 million domestic.                   Ben-Hur died on its second weekend with a drop nearly 60%. But it's drop is actually better than Exodus:Of Gods and Kings(66%), and Gods Of Egypt(63%). But still Ben-Hur is a huge loss for Paramount, and they need make a game plan very soon. Look for Ben-Hur to come close to $25 million domestic.                                                              Outside of the top 12, at number 13 Southside With You had an alright start at an estimated $3 million. With mixed-word-of-mouth(a 58% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes), the film needs to get a boost in expansion.                                     At number 16, Weinstein Company's delayed boxing film Hands Of Stone bombed with an estimated $1.7 million. That debut is worse than most comparable films such as Southpaw, and Warrior. But those were in over 2,000 screens, unlike Hands Of Stone which is under 900 screens. Hands Of Stone should make around $3-$4 million by the end of its run.

With 3 more days left in August which is currently at $978.3 million which is the second best August! There's a chance that it could make it to a billion! And also could pass August 2014's record-breaking gross.

STB opened well over 300  Imax screens from memory think close to 400

This weekend SS, JB and some SLOP dominate Imax, couple still with BH and even STB

Well, I'll try seeing if STB is in IMAX anywhere in my vicinity this weekend, but I doubt it.  I checked the IMAX history after the last person said it came out in IMAX and saw I was wrong, that it did.  The first time I went it was based on a specific timeframe and we ended up in 2D.  I then tried to see it in IMAX but it must have been after the two week window, because I couldn't find it.

Will likely do at least 30M+ in existing markets, 30M more domestic to get to 310-315M, and Japan will add its regular 10M+. Looking at a 390-405M OS, 310-315M domestic for a 700-720M final total.

Both Deadpool and Suicide Squad will most likely end in the 700M+ range without China which is crazy for those IPs.

This past week SS made 40m from OS, with almost 20m coming from the weekend. It's making way more than 30m from these territories. I'm thinking around 45-50m. And I wouldn't be surprised if Japan reached 20m. This is the kind of crazy movie they love. All in all there's no way SS ends up under 400m OS. And DOM looks more and more like 315-320m. Guru is right. 730m+ is coming. Wonder if Japan can surprise enough for SS to have a shot at 750m.

YES!!!!!

Maybe this will finally end the whole "toxic word of mouth" BS talk about Suicide Squad. It is a hit and audiences are not hating it, like so many people (here and on media platforms) kept claiming.

Good for the DCEU.

Of course, I expect someone to soon start claiming that this week's hold is due to a million other reasons BUT audiences enjoying the film.

Yep.

While I agree with u.....I think we're trying to move past all this now. LMD is gone for a while and it's peaceful right now. Let it go @Cochofles
