ARRIVAL
Paramount

Denis Villeneuve’s lyrical sci-fi drama world premiered to a warm reception — and five-minute standing ovation — at the Venice Film Festival in September with critics praising the film’s emotional and cerebral twist on the alien invasion genre. The movie, starring Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner, is being released domestically by Paramount with Sony picking up some offshore territories and the rest handled by Film Nation Entertainment partners (particularly the UK and Australia). The total overseas weekend was $10.2M, all combined.

For FNE markets, the weekend estimate is $5.6M. EOne opened Arrival at 561 UKlocations for $3.1M, a career best for Villeneuve whose last pic was last year’s Oscar nominated Sicario. In AustraliaArrival grossed $1.6M from 268 locations for No. 2 behind Doctor Strange and his stranglehold on No. 1. This is also a best-ever for Villeneuve. In New Zealand the total is $293K at 90; similarly a record for Villeneuve. In IsraelArrival landed $113.5K.

Sony is in the mix here in Russia and elsewhere, as part of a strategic and opportunistic move on a high-profile property with both critical and commercial appeal. The 21 SPRI markets grossed $4.6M from 2,200 screens. The film showed great strength as it played through the weekend everywhere, suggesting it’s set up for a long, successful run. Among highlights, Russia launched to $1.8M from 925 screens, which is on par with District 9 for the FSS comparison. Mexico debuted to $665K from 362 screens, 49% ahead of District 9.

Why do we have two of these threads? There are only a couple of posts in the other but maybe they could be merged here.

Deadline reporting $10.2 int'l to start. UK/Aus/NZ launch coming in around 5 mil, which is about 50% better than Sicario. Russia looks strong to start. Deadline is comparing it to District 9, which did $95 mil without China. That seems a decent target with +$100 mil as the reach. After the current openings, I don't see what market could give it the massive breakout needed for $150 mil (except possibly South Korea).

I think much will depend on whether Sony can pull off a successful bait and switch, getting strong openings based on action movie marketing but stretching the legs with Arrival's adult themes.

Screendaily - Landing in Spain with $975k from 323 screens, Arrival took an extra estimated $6.5m from its 27 markets for an early $21.65m. From its five FilmNation Entertainment territories, the critically acclaimed sci-fi added an estimated $2.9m for $11.35m to date. It fell only 45% against Fantastic Beasts in the UK to add $1.7m for $7m, and added $922k for $3.2m in Australia.

Its 22 Sony markets delivered $3.5m for $10.3m, including the solid Spanish debut and an $850k second weekend in Russia for $3.5m to date. Sony opens the film in Brazil and Germany next weekend.

Reporting on this is a little spotty this weekend. It was at $35.1 mil international total as of Thursday with $3.6 mil added in its Sony territories over the weekend. Assume a similar number in its non-Sony territories and I expect it's around $42 mil total right now.

That's a little muted, to be honest. I thought it could get to the century both international and domestic but I think it's international total may now top out around $70 mil. (France, Italy, S. Korea, and Japan are to come.) Still, it will easily triple its budget so should show a healthy profit.

Arrival took an additional $3.3m from its 42 territories for $54.4m so far.

From its 34 Sony markets, the critically acclaimed sci-fi grossed $2.7m from its 34 markets for $32.6m. In France, it stands at $3.2m after two weeks in play.

It has amassed $21.8m from its eight FilmNation Entertainment territories to date.
