Weekend #s: Sully 22M, Blair Witch 9.6M, Bridget Jones 8.2M, Snowden 8M, DB 5.6M, WTBB 5.5M, Squad 4.7M

Boring weekend nonetheless. I hoped the Friday estimates see a solid increase like Sully! Blair Witch's OD at $7 million or so could result $15 million if it dies out quick. $16-$17 million wouldn't be a bad result. Word of mouth for it is horrible but expected for the film.   Bridget Jones really performing on  par with expectations, and should play the older female crowd who aren't really in the market with films lately(besides Bad Moms). Snowden flopping is no surpise the film looked laughable by the looks of the trailer.

Full review coming tomorrow but I saw Bridget Jones's Baby tonight and I really didn't know just how much I missed seeing Renee Zellweger in movies. I had the biggest smile on my face when she first appeared.

Was anyone else bothered by prominent placement of Despicable Me headphones in a gift shop when the movie takes place a year and a half before that film came out?

Woah. Now that is pretty bad for Blair Witch.

 

Honestly, it feels like buzz for the film peaked when the real title was revealed. Although I'm guessing the grosses wouldn't have been much higher had it been released closer, whatever interest there was pretty much evaporated when the RT score began plummeting (indeed, there's already a backlash against those early critics who overhyped it).

Holy yikes. Wingard and Barrett can't catch a break at the box-office. You're Next tragically clunked for reasons completely lost on me, The Guest didn't even receive a wide release, and now this, seemingly their mainstream breakout, is a huge disappointment at the box-office and this time there aren't even rave reviews to ease the burn.

 

If Death Note bombs (and let's face it, it's a live-action anime adaptation, the odds are high) Wingard might start having a hard time getting work. This sucks.

Really weird case here for sure. Were the early critics more inclined to give it good reviews because of the surprise factor from the movie being a Blair Witch sequel? Can't understand how it can get reviews praising it to high heaven when the reveal happened and then plummeting now.

From what I gather, they mainly invited quote-ready horror sites who were obviously taken by Adam Winguard's previous movies to those screenings and therefore were much more charitable than everyone else.

You're next was a play on horror tropes before it became the mainstream friendly thing to do. It and Cabin in the woods set the stage for the more self aware horror we see now. It also came out just before torture porn fell out of favor completely. Good movie at the wrong time IMO. Could have made a star out of Sharni Vinson, or at least made Erin a popular cosplay if it was a year or 2 later.

I finally saw You're Next on Netflix two years ago and laughed my ass off throughout the whole thing. The daughter who complains "no ever believes in me!!" before running out the door in slomo lmao. Erin is the greatest character ever.
