It had better Thursday previews than Ultron yet dropped like a rock. The warning signs were there but people didn't want to listen. The box office run of BVS was so fascinating and is what got me into hardcore box office analysis.

Didn’t the movie open near Good Friday? That’s probably why the OD numbers were as high as they were. I followed the movie from the day it was announced to its eventual release, and I can safely say that the hype just wasn’t there, at least not compared to CW.

All things considered, BvS had a pretty underwhelming OW, especially considering how far below the estimates it was.

You could be right about estimate (i.e. worst Sunday drop than studio expected ?, looking at it 170M started to be talked about during that weekend)

But I remember quite the other way around about being underwhelming:

https://www.boxofficepro.com/long-range-forecast-batman-v-superman-dawn-of-justice-my-big-fat-greek-wedding-2/

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Mar 25, 2016 Warner Bros. $154,000,000

http://collider.com/batman-vs-superman-box-office-opening-weekend-tracking/

Early tracking, via Variety, suggests an opening weekend of at least $120 million, which could climb as high as $140 million for the Easter weekend as it launches on roughly 4,000 domestic screens across a wide arrange of formats, from 3D to IMAX to good old-fashioned 2D.

It ended up doing 420M WW, with a breaking Hunger Games record of that month domestic $166M.

A mix of Terrible legs and how extraordinary the Marvel affair opened since can make it look much weaker that what it was in reality, it was a giant opening OW, specially that it was not close at all to play 4 quadrants.

It really wasn’t a giant OW for what was supposed to be DC’s big event movie that would help compete with the MCU. It just barely came in higher than what the Nolan Batman movies made on OW, and those movies didn’t have inflated 3D ticket prices or early Thursday previews.

Those movies were breaking all-time record, sure compared to them, but it was a rotten movie with a quite mixed to be generous WOM.

That was the kind of start that was competing with the MCU, only RDJs one had opened bigger than that back at the time, BvS was almost the same has Civil War domestic.

I don't expect out of this world legs for this. Unlike Aladdin, which for all its faults, was an actual fun movie, I don't think LK will be delightful.   Fun always wins

well aladdin will have 4 multi, and 91 ow of course lion king wont come close to that and no not always fun wins , it depends on the quality of the movie, , lion king will have legs anywhere from 2,8-3,2

If there was any significant hype for the film, it definitely would’ve made more on OW, regardless of WoM, especially with Good Friday. MoS alone made almost $129 million on OW, and that movie was extremely divisive. I distinctly recall the general response to the initial teaser for BvS ranging from “meh” to “this movie’s gonna suck!” Any hope WB had of rivaling the MCU went out the window the moment MoS proved to be so polarizing. It unfortunately killed a lot of the potential hype for BvS.

Let’s put it this way, if this movie were to open to comparable numbers to BvS, I think Disney would be disappointed by that. Luckily for them, this movie is a shoe-in to make a lot more than that.

Terrible movie (by most measure) has a 27.7m preview gross, that a clue that it had giant hype.

Comparing it to Lion King, the remake of a movie that is in the short list of movies in the conversation for the biggest success of all time.

Look at the list of movies above and just Below BvS here:

http://www.boxofficereport.com/previewgrosses.html

All the title above 20M kind of had automatically an significant hype imo (and over 10M for real midnight one).

BvS's OD gross is almost equal with JW, above Avengers 1 and at the time was top 5 all time. To say it didn't have hype before WOM kicked in and underwhelmed the rest of the weekend is shortsighted imo.

Having a higher OD than The Avengers isn’t too surprising when you factor in the Thursday previews that began at 6PM, as well as Good Friday. I’m not saying WoM didn’t cost it some money on OW, but I think it’s fair to assume that even with solid WoM, the movie would’ve come in below CW. It was never going to be an Avengers-level success.

Seems like Letterboxd is being brigaded quite a bit by people who haven't even seen the movie. Even Captain Marvel wasn't brigaded.

CM wasn’t brigaded on Letterboxd? That’s a little surprising.

Take it from a Cameron fan: Favreau has already topped Avatar. He just made the most creatively bankrupt expensive tech demo ever.

I don't know why people still waste their times to bring down grades that nobody cares.

Once the movie get released, the grades will up again and they can't stop it. Also, the only thing that really matters is Cinemascore.

Captain Marvel was also attacked basically everywhere and have low grades until today, and still have an A cinemascore and good legs.

Isn't Letterbox usually for the film geek crowd? Captain Marvel was targeted by the alt-right YouTube crowd not the type that would bother with Letterbox.

Letterboxd is the domain of Film Twitter, which has had pretty much all of its members have their knives out for this movie since Day 1. Makes sense.

This movie was only made for money, and the people who are gonna catapult this to astronomical numbers probably don't even know what Letterboxd is. It's like the epitome of corporate film-making, to a degree that Sony's TASM films would feel jealous of.
