I hope we'll get some updated numbers from asian markets (Hong Kong, Taiwan, Indonesia) soon...

China, $56,402,900 (¥392M up to last Sunday, will end its run at about ¥410M)

Hong Kong, $1,873,200 (HK$14,527,500 up to 1/1, should pass US$2M in the near future)

Taiwan, $3,573,500 (NT$43.87M for Taipei and more than NT$110.00M for the whole territory, will earn more than RO here…)

Indonesia, $772,773

Turkey, $130,857 (by comparison, Fury earned about US$1.35M here :()

United Arab Emirates, $1,499,869

Israel, $427,573

Some impending releases are listed as follow,

Philippines, 15th Feb.

Singapore, 19th Jan.

Japan, Feb.

South Korea, Feb. (Fury earned $9.3M and I wouldn't surprised if HR get more than $10M here)

No information for Vietnam, Thailand and India.

I always get the numbers which were listed on boxofficemojo.com if the site already updated them (Australia, New Zealand, etc.) and get the number from the official agencies if boxofficemojo.com didn't give the number (Hong Kong, Taiwan, etc.). According to my own calculation, the total earn should be $86M to $87M up to this Monday and it is noticeable higher than DHD's report.

I found this gap before Christmas holiday and right now, it seems that this difference is enlarging.

BTW, I record all the number in US$.

I am not sure if you and BOM use the same US$ in the cases you get them from somewhere else, that was one of my questions. Not to doubt you (I think often are peaople focused on one title... way better than a person writing a lot of articles for an outlet like deadline), but to maybe find the difference.

As said, some use the per day exchange rate, some the per week.... that can sum up quite a bit.

This week we are in a bit of a luck, as comscore gave the top 30 (often only top 20 to 25 get released by...) anf Hacksaw is still on the chart.

Quote

That includes only Sunday, but you have already some Monday numbers.

Have you the Monday numbers at hand?

Deadline said the weekend was:

Quote

Hacksaw Ridge (var): $2.2M intl weekend (18 markets); $83.9M intl cume

That seems to be the official comscore/Rentrak weekend total estimate

Do you concur with 18 markets? Maybe they do not have access to one or two markets?

What is with film festivals, are there any with it being screened, maybe outside the markets already released in? If there is a release planed in such a country, I've seen the money later get added to the country's BO (including its OD), till then 'carried' with the totals (like 'other territories')

I'll add the-numbers.com OS details,  so it might be more simple to compare. They too seem to use the comscore est. but maybe a country differs from your data?

They list 14 countries, so the remaining 4 markets seem to have made more than I'd thought without the countries getting named. But maybe that includes the per country differences of the not up-to-date totals (of the countries each) to the newest total of all.

I only have the Monday number of China, 1.83M/$0.26M. It's $87.365M up to Sunday and details are listed as follows,

Mexico,  $911,363

Paraguay, $13,514

Uruguay, $12,066

--------------------------

US$0.937M for LA

Australia, $5,961,989

New Zealand, $612,921

-----------------------------

US$6.573,910 for OA

All the numbers of European countries are come form boxofficemojo.com and the total should be US$15,178,438

China, $56,397,1000 (official number from Olive, 392M lc. up to Sunday)

Hong Kong, $1,873,200 (official number, up to 1/1)

Taiwan, $3,573,500 (NT$43.87M for Taipei and more than NT$110M for the whole territory)

Indonesia, $772,773

Israel, $427,573

Turkey, $54,233

UAE, $1,499,869

-------------------------------------

US$64,674,872 for AS

Adding these figures up, we can get the total should be $87,365,163 and this number should be lower than actual one. Firstly, this calculation misses some new openers this weekend like Argentina. And then, the numbers of some countries on boxofficemojo.com are incomplete, for example, it gave France a $3.79M up to 18th Dec and no update anymore, but we know that HR is still in theaters here right now, so I had already underestimated as I quoted those incomplete numbers.

By the way, using different exchange rate couldn't be a problem, it will of course bring in some differences but not a US$4M.

You are right, with that amount maybe as a possible point out of a sum of reasons.

I hope on the next updat from BOM bringing some ideas. For the moment I still have a blank for possible reasons, beside maybe someone out of the reporting countries... made a mistake, but then why growing difference?

Very strange, but also very interesting, maybe we will learn some new insight in OS numbers. Fingers crossed.

In case I do not react: can you ping me or ... when BOM updates the film's OS? = especially the per country details. I can try to add a German's website's data, but they only offer the top 10, maybe for comparisons out of the early week in release in the countries they offer insight  too.

Yeah, Boxofficemojo.com starts to update the numbers right now, we might find the result soon.

Whatever, Hacksaw Ridge will easily pass 110M overseas and let me do some predictions,

UK: 13.6M (about 1/5 of the total of North American)

South Korea:12M (Fury got 9.3M here and HR's WOM could be much better)

Japan: 1.5M (well...)

Italy: 2.2M (half of Fury)

Brazil, 1.5M (two thirds of Fury)

Germany, 3M

others new releases, 3M

other holders, 4M (China will give another 3M)

83.9+40.3=124.2M;)

BTW, I am a little bit disappointed with HR's French and Spanish numbers thus I just expect a conservative US$3.5M in Germany, is it reasonable?

I have no idea,

I very rarely do a strange version of prediction, its more like:

what do we know (if it is a franchise or a specialised genre), what is WOM out of the production, the reputation of the film makers, than I look into what did what in which country at which year, ... = the possible expectations of reviewers and GA, which kind of GA, is the summary appealing for...

Uplifting or not... I am a strong 'believer' in certain films reach way higher results per repeat viewers (who drag usually others with them)

When a language is doing less than others, or in a ~ cultural connected region... I look into translation not done good, are there feelings of an audience hurt (e.g. Germans usually are fed up about Nazi stereo-types...) trailer reaction... see franchise, how many in which how many years, was the before with a good or bad WOM... established or not  characters or world.... (like books, got they even translated? When? In which quality...)

War films = had the country recently unrest, a war something making the people wary or loving for war as a theme (not speaking about HR, general) Out of that I try to see an low point for OW per country (see also exchange rate, local competition, holidays...). I think the rest is WOM, what audience group clicks with it... (plus logically: does the film live up to its reputation, is the aimed at audience satisfied)

I like to have a general feeling, but I am not looking into limits / possible high results.

I look really closley into films'd BO and way more long after its run - in all countries. And then I want to know all, what people thought, what reviewers said, which merchandise, tax returns, all that is accessible.

Maybe asking in the German thread?

So all in all... It should hit close to $200m, right? That is pretty awesome for a movie with a $40m budget. I hope this gets Mel Gibson back in the financial graces of Hollywood so he can direct more movies. I think he may be one of my favorite directors from the standpoint he really hasn't made/directed a dud yet.

Is it released in Puerto Rico too?

If yes, there might be an additional point to the sum of discrepancy

There is at dom and in the Passengers thread here at International (OS) some info about it.

I'll link to Passengers, as mor at the same place, less spread out.

I wonder where it'll end up with the following territories to release in:

Chile 17 January 2017
Singapore 19 January 2017
Brazil 26 January 2017
Germany 26 January 2017
UK 27 January 2017
Ireland 27 January 2017
Italy 9 February 2017
Philippines 15 February 2017

I would think that the following should be reasonable:

Chile: $250k

Singapore: $1.5m

Brazil: $1.5m

Germany: $4m

UK: $10m

Ireland: $1m

Italy: $2m

Philippines: $2m (larger than average gross due to nature of film, much like China)

Tot: $22.3m USD

Still think this movie hits $200m worldwide.

I think $10M for United Kingdom is a little bit conservative and how about 13.5M, 1/5 of the total of North America (Fury got 12.74M here)?

And it will also release in South Korea in the next month.

Ah, I wasn't aware of a Korean release date. I assume it will do well there, given general Anti-American sentiments.

SK population watches films not based on out-of-the-cinema-political views or films like e.g. your name wouldn't run that good there.

Me watching ww BO since the '90 didn't find a lot of indicators there is even something like anti US if it is about films.

I mean if a bio pic about a ... lets say American football sports man does not make a lot in other countries = that has nothing to do with anit-US, it has to do with having no interest into watching something about someone they simply do not know.

Or if a film builds up on:

all of US is good, all Asian/Africans/Russians/... are bad/stupid/drug lords/... then they might also not give a lot of money at the BO.

Again = has nothing to do with being anti US, but with the bias or worse used in such kind of films.

Anti-American sentiments is something in general seems used way too often, only because something will not agreed on (for varying degrees) makes the persons / peoples /... not agreeing / disagreeing not an anti-American neither.

Still scratching my head about what to think about that post.

HR did a good job in many Asian territories including China mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong, thus I think it will also do well in Singapore and SK.

The Domestic number is very decent IMO but what surprises me more is the OS number. I mean that it is close to 100M and still has several big(ger) and promising markets left (Chile, Singapore, Brazil, GB, Germany/Austria/CH, Italy, Philippines and SK).

Really not easy but I would say yes. Let's see: Reviews so far have been mixed. And mixed means some - only some - reviewers scored the film 3/10 (one critic even 1/10) and couldn't stand it personal. Other reviews, especially on high frequented websites, are good or even outstanding. Internet-interest is there but I don't know how that will translate into admissions. In one and a half week, we will know more and I will report :).

Mark from insidekino.de hopes for more but at the moment predicts 300k admissions which would mean around 3M US$. Sounds a little bit too conservative in my view.
My Cons: Maybe too gory for some older moviegoers; not all do like Mr. Gibson; I guess it will not get a big release or much advertisement; Germans don't like "religious" films as much as Americans do.
My Pros: Mel Gibson is still very well known here and many people liked movies he has directed, especially Braveheart; it's a R-rated film which is rare; the worldwide reviews are good and the nominations will also help (a little bit); the controversial discussions will cause interest too.

Since the numbers are too slight I cannot find its daily report in either Hong Kong or Taiwan, but the totals there should be $2.1M and $3.6M.

And in China, it earned 409.60M/$59.5M up to Thursday and the drop of this weekend will be really small, even though it will lose nearly all its showtimes when the Spring Festival begins, it will safely pass 415M here and 419M/$60.5M is still possible.
