The Thanksgiving moviegoing stretch began last night and no one has even sat down for dinner yet. Warner Bros. Harry Potter spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them grossed $8.75M from showtimes starting at 6PM.

 

Heading into the weekend, tracking had Fantastic Beasts at a $70M-$80M opening with Fandango reporting that advance ticket sales as of Wednesday were besting those of Doctor Strange prior to its opening. As we know, that Disney/Marvel film went on to open to $85M.

So much for the crazy $110M+ predictions some were posting this week. Studio tracking will be in the right ballpark assuming the film isnt quite as frontloaded as mainline HP.

Looks like walk-ups were extremely weak. Yeah this is not crossing 100m

People were expecting at least 10M,  10-15M being the usual range so that's pretty damn low, yep. Here's hoping it's not as front-loaded as a normal Harry Potter movie.

They should have left Potter and its legacy alone. This always looked bad.

Yikes.  Pre-sales were a lot stronger than Dr. Strange and at least what I can see did great last night but across the country walk ups must have been extremely weak.  

 

Still will be a success overall, but wonder if this makes Warner Bros. do a double take.
