Everyone must be so busy consuming Disney news that they aren't posting this here.  Even if you've read it elsewhere, I'm posting this here for archive purposes.  I'm not a huge fan of Villeneuve and DUNE looks a bore to me, but I 110% support everything he's saying here, and of course so do many of us here.  I already had my doubts about Villeneuve's DUNE, Part 2, even happening, but this whole debacle pretty much solidifies it.  Plus, Villeneuve will also likely walk away to another studio for future work.

Hoping this causes a larger influx of talent to take publically criticize WB/AT&T and this stupid move. James Gunn, Lana Wachowski, Margot Robbie, Keanu Reeves, etc. We've already got reports many of them are displeased privately, so I think they can now safely say it out without facing backlash since some have already started.

Between this and the whole Ray Fisher debacle, it's surprising Mamoa still has Aquaman 2 coming up... we'll see.  😂   What if Disney/Marvel coup him for their Namor??  😂

 

But the reality here is that so much of the talent associated with the studio are with each other on this.

They'll wait until Wonder Woman comes out to change their mind on a lot of them (mainly things like this, Suicide Squad, Matrix 4) but will likely keep it for a few select titles like Judas & the Black Messiah (because of awards season) and Tom & Jerry.

That being said, Villeneuve should be careful what he wishes for, because Dune is 99 % going to be a massive flop at the B.O., likely much worse than BR2049, which was a well known IP to the general public.

A lot of people, yes, but well known to the general public? No.

It was then (sadly) a flop, got a growing following later on too, but still, the general public isn’t even in general into Sci-Fi (exceptions are always existing, often eg space operas, if its about Sci-Fi)

Out of the experience in my circle of friends: some know it, some know about it, the most of those who know it respect it, but quite some wont do a repeat view as the world... in a way depressed them.

And way too many do not watch genre movies made for teens, YA or older, only if they have to accompany a relative or so.
