Maybe Villeneuve got a good deal for greenlighting the sequel. Story might be a little more complex is all i'm saying. Timing itself is reason enough to not delay, this movie gets a impactful 3 minutes trailer back in september 2020 [it have 36M views on WB channel alone only on youtube], pushing it further to 2022 would hurt it even more. If movies like No Time To Die which is a strong franchise with fanbase already get hurted by so many time being delayed, imagine something like Dune which is far from consolidated. If Warner indeed promise to Villeneuve that the movie only needs to do well on HBO Max and they will let him do the sequel no matter what box office it made, is way better to release now than delay again, losing more timing and depends on a good box office since next year there won´t be HBO Max.

It's just too artsy and slow-burn for general audiences to enjoy. I'm frankly shocked Warner and Legendary actually gave Denis such a big budget, especially considering it's just the first half of the book. Anyone who thinks we're getting Part 2 is hopelessly naive. See you in 2058 when Netflix decides to take a crack at it. Did you realize HBO Max already asked for a TV show right? They´re investing not only in movies but also in other projects for their streaming related to Dune, clearly they want to build this universe even if it doesn´t find huge audiences in the first movie, there´s always room to grow when you have such an intriguing world building being constructed, and also they already know this movie will never make enough money since their entire slate passed through the same, so they won´t see the underwhelming box office numbers and decide there won´t be another movie being made because of that alone. Even variety say that clearly: ´´However, insiders say the HBO Max deal gives Villeneuve assurances that diminished box office revenues won’t prohibit him from having the chance to make his follow-up film. Other films that had a hybrid release still have sequel talks, with Warner Bros. looking to develop other installments in its “Mortal Kombat” universe.´´ Edited September 14, 2021 by ThomasNicole

Elessar
So i came across this image... It seems they are not using the full height of IMAX. This is basically 16:9 TV format.

But I doubt this qualify as socially relevant theme. Dune has overt themes of: Colonialism (more pronounced now with the native Fremen being POC) Imperialism Environmentalism Feminism Theocratic dictatorship People keep comparing it to Star Wars on the space setting with high tech weaponry battles, but thematically it's more Fury Road meets Game of Thrones. House Atreides and House Stark parallels are strong. House Harkonnen is a mix of House Targaryen and Lannister.
vale900
Previews in France started in the last couple of hours in over 300 screens. Tomorrow the movie will be released in 950 screens (!) according to this tweet they are doing good translation: "judging by the row for the previews the film should be a success. Let's see if it also deserve it....." Edited September 14, 2021 by vale900

vale900
"I haven't seen a movie theater so packed to the brim in years , even more in a movie theater that is usually uncrowded" This is another screen in France Some people here really underestimated this movie 😅. I don't know about the Us but here in continental Europe has been promoted as "the movie of the year" and the appeal is really multi target. vale900
The Denis Villeneuve-directed adaptation of Frank Herbert’s 1965 classic will be playing in just 24 markets this weekend, beginning offshore rollout tomorrow. Of the majors going this session are France, Germany, Russia, Italy and Spain. Our industry sources are projecting a launch in the mid-$20M range. PLFs will play a large part; IMAX is on about 150 screens. Pandemic era comps to consider for Dune include Black Widow, while Villeneuve’s 2017 Blade Runner 2049 is also worth noting given the film’s pedigree and history. In like-for-like markets, and at today’s rates, those films opened to $22.8M and $24.4M, respectively. Anticipation is high for Dune in Europe — and there’s a fair bit of rain washing across the continent over the coming days which is music to distribution and exhibition’s ears. Then again, the long runtime will impact the number of showings. Because the film only hits HBO Max on October 22, in line with the domestic release, piracy may be less of a concern — at least in terms of pristine copies.
