HBO Max is definitely the best thing that could have happened to Dune, any underperformance can be masked there. The release date is also so bad, right after Bond, Venom and Halloween.

We'll know how unhappy WB is if they put out "it underperformed there too" statements like they did with The Suicide Squad and In the Heights.

Drawing comparison against 2001 doesn't scream like big money maker. And if the movie pacing is slower, HBO max will be a even bigger issue since people tend to fast forward the scene if they find it going slow , thereby diluting the viewing experience.

10 spots guaranteed this year , right?

Yes. Though they keep preferential ballot for choosing the winner which makes a win tough for a movie like Dune.

Jessica is the heart of the book so happy to see the movie gets it right.

Now that the reviews are out this probably would've struggled to make much more than Blade Runner 2049 did had it made its pre-COVID release date of last December but it doesn't matter now since like all of WB's movies this year it's a write-off after the HBO Max announcement.

Even with worse reviews, the movie still has more going for it. Easily would've beat BR2049 especially with December.

The average rating is unusual high for a 80% film. The other one that I can remember being this unusual is Joker, where it has 7.3/10 against 68% RT score

Those who love it, really love it. Likely to dip but I would imagine it'll be abnormally high compared to whatever percentage it ultimately lands at.

no. it's going to have pasisonate supporters. Win is likely out of question, but nom should be fine for 10 spots.

But Blade Runner 2049 missed both BP and BD noms.

I remember Joker had insane 9.3/10 against 87% after Venice and around 50-60 reviews.
