Elessar
Denis Villeneuve never made a mainstream blockbuster, although Blade Runner had the budget of one. Dune probably comes the closest to one.

You keep bringing up a R-rated sequel to a boxoffice flop (that was made by Ridley Scott, who has also had his fair share of other flops so not sure why you're bringing him) which is kinda unfair, espescially when it did fine for the kind of film it was. Arrival and Prisoners were hit and Sicario did ok. The threshold for those is a hell of a lot lower than what Dunes going to need to make to get Part 2 greenlit. Arrival and Prisoners were in the 40 million range. Dune is 4-5 times more expensive than that. 12 hours ago, ThomasNicole said: WB is really commited with Dune. At this point i doubt they would made a Part 1 movie and a TV series only to scrap the Part 2 movie. Again: not a guarantee of a sequel. Until they give the greenlight, likely after this one is released, there's no telling what could happen. Matthew McConaughey was going to reprise his Dark Tower character for The Stand and that never wound up happening. Plans change all the time.

At this point it also has more anticipation than Blade Runner 2049.

Detective Pikachu had crazy trailer view numbers that absolutely did not translate into comparable box office.
Menor the Destroyer
I think Dune should do better than BR2049 unless HBO Max really causes an issue. It's just looks like a much more crowdpleasing and enjoyable film. As much as I liked 2049 it was a very dark and depressing movie.

It's crazy to me that you're trying to pass off awareness as irrelevant, but keep bringing up the boxoffice take of an unrelated movie as the one predictor we should be using (which apparently means that Dune is gonna flop...). So you can only give me the one movie that people have been bringing up for the past two years when a non-Marvel or Star Wars movie manages to rack up quite anticipation (I remember when people said this when GvK's trailers was doing quite well too). Seems to me like Pikachu is an exception (video game related stuff in general have overinflated hype on the internet, and unlike Pikachu, Dune isn't a video game movie). SpiderByte
If a talented director were enough to drive people to Dune then the 80s one would have done better.

Dark Tower is not really a good comparisson with Dune which not only have Part 1 on it's title (which means Part 2 is at least in pre production), but also a TV series. Of course nothing is guaranteed, but they are comitted with it, the only way i see they cancel everything is if Dune bomb hard ala In The Heights which seems highly unlikely at this point. I can't help but feel like people viewed it as a fun proof of concept trailer, but were largely uninterested in seeing a full movie about that. It also, along with Godzilla 2, got lost in the shuffle of the incredibly packed summer 2019 slate. It's pretty telling that the last time we heard of any mention of a sequel was two and a half years ago, and that was before the movie actually came out. Justice Smith, the live action lead, came out a couple of months ago and claimed that a sequel was unlikely. I wonder if Legendary will ever do anything else with that IP. They'll probably let it lapse and Illumination will likely pick up the license. Edited July 23, 2021 by BadOlCatSylvester

It's impressive how people keep ignoring the fact that the 80s movie was a complete disaster. Critics didn't like it, general audiences didn't like it, fans straight up hated it. Which director can make a hated movie avoid failure? No matter how talent the director is if nobody like the movie, including Lynch which publicy said upon release that he hated the final cut. And even talking about the directors themselves, we can't ignore that Dune was just the third Lynch movie, he wasn't that recognizible when Dune came out. From the man himself, talking about HBO Maxs potential impact on the film "Streaming can produce great content, but not movies of “Dune’s” scope and scale. Do you really came with a december article to prove your point? Let's go then, in December Villeneuve are riot against HBO Max to the entire media see it. Now the movie is confirmed to HBO Max and he is not complaining about it, so... See how things change in 8 months? Again, nobody here is saying is guaranteed. But ignoring the fact that they make a global event this week on IMAX presenting the movie as Part 1 and yesterday Villeneuve was confirmed to help directing the HBO Max series is nonsense. I said they are commited with this franchise, which clearly they are, it's just a fact.
