Everything else seems to be 1.90:1 The Lion King have around 30 minutes shot in IMAX 1:43:1 and showed this way on theaters capable of screening the format. Dune will be released on both 1:43:1 and 1:90:1 depending on the theater. It's the first movie shot with the new certified IMAX cameras tho. Everything else seems to be 1.90:1 Tron Legacy and Lion King are the only 'Formatted for IMAX' to give the full 1:43:1 image for sections of the film. Largely because they are completely CGI. I was quite surprised to hear they'd be giving the full ratio to parts of Dune because there's gonna be more 'in camera' stuff. So maybe they're really trying with this one when it comes to the IMAX stuff. Spoiler All the the 'Certified for IMAX', 'Formatted for IMAX', 'Shot on IMAX', has become somewhat meaningless outside of 70MM IMAX stuff. Whichever one is used, the distinctness and IMAXness of the image isn't usually considered when shooting since the intended image tends to be 2:35:1, and the look of the film is closer tied to the post-production process so the sensor size and pixel size don't matter too much as well. Its the slow dilution of the IMAX brand, just trying to slap the name on as many things as possible.
AJG
Wait so is this going to be in the 4:3 box on HBO like the S****r Cut?

On HBO Max it'll either be the same aspect ratio as the trailers (2.39:1) throughout or the black bars will disappear during Imax scenes (think TDK, TDKR, WW84) meaning a 1.78:1/16:9 ratio. Is it possible that Villeneuve got lost in the material and the movie just doesn't make sense to people who are not already familiar with the material? If that's the case then the film is toast. IMDb says: 1.43 : 1 (IMAX Laser: some scenes) 1.78 : 1 (Blu-ray release: some scenes) 1.90 : 1 (Digital IMAX: some scenes) 2.39 : 1 Dune's cameras have a native AR of 1.43:1, so there won't be any cropping or reformatting in the Laser sequences. Edit - IMDb says the Blu-Ray will be 1.78:1, so that might apply to Max too. Edited August 29, 2021 by WrathOfHan

I'm seeing it Friday in Venice and I don't know a lick about the novel other than it has a giant worm and something to do with spice. 1

This is not really worrying. The most negative reaction was written by Sasha Stone (the Grace Randolph of awards pundits). The most positive one was written by an actual critic, Todd McCarthy. Nikostar
Won’t be shocked if this gets an Interstellar kind of reaction from critics.

ThomasNicole
Why anyone think Warner would send a divisive movie to basically ALL the big festivals more than a month before release? Okayish reviews would hurt it more than help. And the studios always know when they have a movie that won't get stellar reception. I see 0 reasons to worry about this movie, at least critically wise. EmpireCity
No offense, but this quote from that site makes me think the 3 "sources" are horseshit or unreliable.... Quote Third person: “Dune‘s not bad. It just makes no sense. But that’s okay — it’s a mood piece. Good to see if you’re really stoned. Greig Fraser‘s cinematography is quite mesmerizing and that you can coast along on that aspect to your heart’s content. The plotting was too complex and it seemed as if everyone was speaking some kind of foreign tongue. This sense of being lost and adrift had not, to put it mildly, coagulated into anything special.”

Lucas
Sasha Stone updated her GoldDerby predictions for the Oscars on the 27th, and Dune is still on the Best Picture list. Unless she saw it after that and hasn't updated it yet (doubtful), it doesn't really seem like her view of its Oscar chances has been affected by seeing the movie. Obviously her predictions list is not the same as a preference list, but she doesn't seem to think its heading for a generally agreed upon reception that'll strip all its awards potential. Like what has happened with a few movies over the years.

It happens sometimes, but this is very unusual, studios tested movies a lot in different environments, despite the exceptions they usually know exactly what they have quality wise. And what BvS version they saw? Because to be fair, the 3 hour cut is pretty decent. The real shit version was the trimmed one. In Dune case is different tho because they actually send the movie for lots of festivals, which means they know it will be well received.
