James Cameron really knows what he is doing. He should not start releasing a movie every a year or two like everyone else. By taking so much time in between movies, he makes all his movies look like big events creating huge hype. Although, the first Avatar wasn't anything incredibly special, I wouldn't be surprised at all if the second one even reached 3 billion. The release of it alone and the hype that will surround it guarrantees 1.5b..If the movie is actually good, a new all time record may happen!

Not every year or two, OK, but if he kept to the same pace between Avatars that he will between Avatar 1 and 2 (presuming it comes out in 2018) #5  would come out in 2045.

Hidden Figures is killing it and is actually doing better than most of its limited competition (Silence, Patriots Day, Live by Night, A Monster Calls) despite being in far more theaters which are spread out throughout the country. The movie is a total crowdpleaser that will have amazing word-of-mouth so expect a breakout next weekend.

There's something to be said for an adult skewing feel good movie during the Holidays without torture, murder, terrorism, death of parent or child etc.

I saw the movie last night and my sold out audience was completely into it throughout (applauding at certain moments and lines of triumph). The timing of it couldn't be anymore perfect in light of what we've been seeing happen in the real world.

Hopefully LION can tap into some of this audience sentiment as well. Of course, it has the "downside" of being partially subtitled and not about Americans.

Well, that didn't hurt Slumdog Millionaire, though I don't think Lion has the same kind of support.

Depends on if it can snag some major Oscar nominations. Its current theater count (525) is probably the highest it's going unless it gets them considering the financial problems of Weinstein.
