Horror 2017

Jeepers Creepers 3, Cult of Chucky, Leatherface, Amityville......  ahh!!

I liked Raw.  I thought it was pretty ambitious.  The Bad Batch was cool too, but its scope was more involved with the world building.  I thought Personal Shopper was the best among the psychological and supernatural horrors.  Other films I thought had various strengths are It Comes At Night and A Cure for Wellness.  I have not got around to A Ghost Story yet.

All the modern mainstream horror was great IMO.

I would rank them:

Get Out

Split

It

Annabelle

Belko Experiment

47 Meters

Phoenix Forgotten

Rings

Bye Bye Man

Friend Request

Wish Upon

and Action Horror:

Alien: Covenant

Life

It

Resident Evil 6

Underworld 4

The Great Wall

Kong: Skull Island

The Dark Tower

The Mummy

Rings, Bye Bye Man & Wish Upon were absolutely awful, among the worst movies produced by the genre this decade.

And let’s not include Alien: Covenant into the Horror genre, the genre doesn’t deserves this crap.

Boy, you sure like to act as if movies you personally have vendettas against shouldn't be categorized in your favorite genre.........

Do you care elaborating the reasons why do you enjoyed this movie? I’m genuinely curious to see what others persons saw in this movie that I didn’t.

The story and the many twists along the way, the character development and the cannibalism it's a just a story point in the movie (a major point yes) but not as a torture porn movie.

With Polaroid being delayed to next year, the year is officially over for the genre. I just hope that the Indie area will give us something in this end of year.

Happy Halloween everyone btw!

Polaroid may have  The amityville awakening treatment. Oh well, that’s not surprising.

Absolutely true! I remember that we all thought that 2017 would be a let down compared to 2016, and look at how things turned into. Horror is the most unpredictable genre out there, a masterpiece can be being produced right now under the radars. I mean, movies like La La Land/Arrival always had some strong buzz behind them towards it’s quality, a movie like Get Out, on other hand, just suddenly show up and grabbed all the attention. Who knows what surprises we can have in 2018?

Too early to say that now.

Yeh, I just mean it’ll take a while for studios to get things rolling after the success of IT. We’ll have to wait and see which franchises they want to reboot too, probably 2019.

I have my hopes on Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street. I hope that Halloween is massive!

I wonder what the hell is Warner waiting to reboot Gremlins? The first movie is the second Horror movie that most sold tickets in history, with the whole nostalgia vibe that we’re living now, it sounds like a surefire hit, it may be even bigger than IT if things are done right.

Friday The 13th may actually happen in the next few years. The lawsuit has to be good after January 1 next year. But either way WB should crank in something due to IT’s success as well as that it’s more profit than nothing for them.

Some thoughts on a few horror films that I've seen recommended from this year that I watched over October (always on the look out for something I missed):

Better Watch Out - A crazy combination of Scream, Home Alone and Funny Games. If you watch this, go in with as little knowledge as possible beforehand and you should have a blast. What starts off as your typical home invasion thriller becomes a lot more with some really clever writing. Honors Christmas the same way Trick 'r Treat honors Halloween. Could view this during either holiday and get just as much enjoyment out of it. - B+

A Dark Song - A slow burn with incredible atmosphere. Dives deep into dark magik rituals with two strong performances. I do wish some of the prosthetic designs were more unique but I give this film a ton of points for it's originality and it has grown on me a lot since my initial viewing last week. It's one I recommend with reservations because it will probably be too slow for many. - B+

The Babysitter - The best horror comedies manage to hit just the right balance of both elements but this completely misses that mark. This is obviously not meant to be taken seriously so I don't know why any scenes are even attempting to invoke tension after the big reveal. If you want to go all in on stupid then go all in on stupid (no character should be dramatically crying during this movie). Over the top fun while it lasts but nothing more. A great case of style over substance. - C+

The Blackcoat's Daughter - Builds great atmosphere but has no emotional impact once it shows it's hand because there is no one to really invest in. Guessed where it was going pretty early on and found it to be pretty mean spirited without having a worthwhile reason for it's ugliness. One great scene can't save it from feeling like "what was the point?" when it's over. If watching innocent people get brutally stabbed for no reason sounds appealing to you....then have at it. - C

Berlin Syndrome - An intriguing take on Stockholm syndrome is let down by inconsistent writing and an extremely sloppy ending. Has a few strong areas that dive into the mind of the victim but the last act ruins the premise. If you're left asking yourself "how did that happen?" as the credits roll you are far from alone. Builds some great tension in areas outside of that though. - C

The Void - Event Horizon/Hellraiser meets a bad Silent Hill fan fiction. Man, this started off so strongly and then just collapses into a gigantic cluster fuck about 20 minutes in. You can basically write your own story because this film doesn't really have one. Things happen and as a viewer, you are left to guess why....like a choose your own adventure book. I'll let another reviewer sum this one up for me - "If only writer-directors Steven Kostanski and Jeremy Gillespie had lavished as much love and attention on plot and structure as they clearly did on production and theme, this ickfest might have been more than a nod to the gory glories of '80s horror." - C-

Contenders for worst movie of year:

- The Bye Bye Man
- Rings
- Wish Upon
- Amityville: The Awakening

Coming soon: Jigsaw.

What’s your choice?

Death Note. It was so horrifying that I turned it off 30 minutes into it.

The Bye Bye Man could have been really good with better writing. Rings was god awful. Not watching Wish Upon or Amityville. Know they're trash and don't need to see them.

Will watch Jigsaw out of theaters. Went through the house at Halloween Horror Nights which is probably more fun than the movie. Not a big fan of the Saw franchise.
