MLK weekend will be decent for Lionsgate! Patriot's Day will breakout people. :ohmygod: while Live By Night will underperform. :sadben:

Define "breakout." I really can't see Patriots Day doing much better than Deepwater Horizon.

The shaded area represents the expected performance range for a film, based on its opening weekend box office. 95% of films fall within the shaded area. If a film trends towards the top end of the shaded area, it has good legs compared to the average film; if it trends towards the bottom end of the shaded area, it has poor legs. The predictive area is based on movies from the past 5 years.

I feel though that the problem with this graph is that it doesn't take into account that Moana is an animatd film. If I'm not mistaken, animated films almost always have better multipliers than most films. That's not to say that Moana isn't doing great but I am trying to imagine, If Moana has such a graph, what would the graph be for Frozen, which had an OW not much better than Moana but will end up outgrossing it by 150m at least..

Not compareable as Frozen used a kind if trick for the build up: 5 days early release in a bigger cinema. Plus it is even if only 29013, outside it the 5 years thing, they started that later, films of 2013 do not have those.

Beside: the graph is for ~ normal films, not for exceptions of the rule. I never even would get the idea to try to compare those - at first not, as too early in the run.... plus the different build up / not comparable stories... but latest as it was clear that it wont be a Frozen repeat, why clinging to that comparison? Makes no sense to me.

Edit: not that similar at 2nd glance neither

For my predictions this week once our bookings come in, I'll be predicting Patriots Day similar to Deepwater Horizon, and Monster Trucks similar to Gods of Egypt.

So Fox can claim $1.2M in Thursday previews for a movie that's already open (!) and magically say it won the weekend?! Hahaha ok! Rogue One won the weekend, which is Friday through Sunday. If you want to count Thursday previews in the Friday gross for a new movie well ok but this thing was already in release! Lol what an epic joke.

Er, yes. That's how previews work for expansions.

Oh, in an overall context, it's fine. Just considering what Moana had been doing for the previous few weeks, it seemed like it could have gone ~1m higher this weekend, and didn't.

It's still probably going to have a final tally right around 250m, quite good, but not spectacular.

We'll see if Moana will be able to match TS2's hold next weekend. Weather obviously had an impact this weekend.

Why Him? is becoming something of a low-key hit. $65M is happening unless theater drops next weekend are too brutal.

Seems like you can only counter-program family and comedies against Star Wars.
