I had the good ol' single tear down my cheek. I wasn't alone tho.

I bet the guy wanting to clean the theater was like "WTF why won't this lonely crying oaf leave the theater so I can sweep it?"

I haven't found a source yet for Canadian box office that gives final figures (playbackonline.ca gives weekly figures only). Based on weekly figures I think Zootopia did slightly better than Pets in Canada and Dory only beat Zootopia by ~$4M. Would you be able to confirm that?

Pets  over Zoo and just over  5m diff Pets & Dory, 2015 in Canada Minions beat IO

BOM does not add up those Foreign totals to get their cumulative O/S total.   It merely presents them and some come in later than others since they only post when they can get actuals and full weekend or weekly charts per territory.  Look at many smaller films where O/S doesn't get reported by ComScore or the Studio and those foreign totals are never completely added up and some don't even have a reported O/S even if they've made 10s of millions.

You can see on top of the Foreign chart where they present the O/S Total and give the date

FOREIGN TOTAL - 12/21/16  n/a $97,249,022

   1/8/17

Fox also has this peculiarity, or at least they did the last time I paid attention with Dragon 2 where they report Puerto Rico as part of their O/S B.O. while also reporting it as part of domestic. So Comscore is counting it for the O/S totals as reported to them by Fox. BOM though is up to their tricks and doesn't count it twice when reporting the full WW number.

Just in this example PR for Fox is Intl, it is controlled by Intl division not domestic and Intl report as such (Controlled by Lat AM), however for some reason Domestic also include  the GBO, in the Fox Intl system they  do remove PR from what they have as the domestic total, however because both divisions report media separately they get a double up. When Brandon Gray was at BOM he had started removing PR(where known) from domestic or intl  totals.

Define "breakout." I really can't see Patriots Day doing much better than Deepwater Horizon.

Honestly, I think Patriots Day and Deepwater Horizon would have done a bit better if they had been released by a major studio that wasn't Lionsgate.

The competitive powah we are dealing with here is...slightly more measurable.

@miketheavenger

I actually went into the trouble of measuring the relative competitive powah that TFA & R1 had to deal with.

Turns out that R1's first three weeks at the BO had fiercer Top 10s to the tune of 32% than TFA's equivalents had. $575M to $436M.

The competitive gap may be measurable, but it's also huge nevertheless.

I'm shocked that Emily Blunt for nominated for The Girl on the Train, was the catergory really that weak!? Silence was snubbed

She was very good in it though. Movie was alright, even fairly good, nothing special but she was great. She has garnered a lot of attention - that's why I was sent the movie on screener.

It's also the BAFTA's - it helps that she's British.

Jonathan, I, Daniel Blake is a Ken Loach film.  I have some doubts it will be to your liking.

Ok, fair enough! Thank you for your advice / opinion :) Not maybe my cup of tea perhaps.

It's interesting that Hidden Figures was successful in the US but not so much in Canada, guess it's a cultural thing

La La Land has two top five entries, I wonder if Lionsgate should have gone wider and could have clinched a number 1 position, it's still going to make money though next week when it expands again.

Being that low in the rankings for Canada suggests HF was about 5% of Domestic.  It must have opened around USD1.1-1.2m.

It doesn't open here until February 16 but I think it can perform better in Australia then Canada.

So Fox can claim $1.2M in Thursday previews for a movie that's already open (!) and magically say it won the weekend?! Hahaha ok! Rogue One won the weekend, which is Friday through Sunday. If you want to count Thursday previews in the Friday gross for a new movie well ok but this thing was already in release! Lol what an epic joke.

The movie opened in limited, but the previews were the 1st sample of its WIDE release. Simple difference, obvious difference. Not rocket science whatsoever.

Hell YEAH at Hidden Figures #1. Nothing better than a refreshing breakout(ish) to start off the year. Almost willing to bet it stays flat next weekend due to backloading (snowstorm).

I couldn't disagree more strongly. It's already questionable enough for ANY wide release including Rogue One to include 7 pm to midnight as part of opening "weekend," which by the way - not rocket science - isn't a weekend. Look up Thursday in the dictionary and I'm pretty sure it ain't the weekend ;) It's a stretch by any means.

But for a movie already in release? Yeah, ok, it "won" the weekend. Sure didn't win either Saturday or Sunday, but it won the weekend. Hey you can define terms any way you want but Rogue One made more money last weekend than Hidden Figures and that's a fact. You're totally right though if you choose to include Thursday night for Hidden Figures and not for Rogue One (which also made more money Thursday night than Hidden Figures), then in that unequal comparison Hidden Figures "won." In other news Rogue One made more money on December 15 and 16 than The Force Awakens did on December 15 and 16 of its box office run. I know, I know it wasn't even out yet but while we are just throwing around arbitrary things I thought I'd add my own :P

As you would say, not rocket science. Where do you work by the way? I want to work there - you get LONG weekends!

The "weekend" in terms of box office gets defined by what the people in question define as the standard for the weekend. If they think Thursday previews belong towards the weekend, then that's the way things get counted. Unless everyone involved agrees to change the formula, that's how things get counted. Just like the "weekend" runs from Thursday to Sunday in Germany because movies happen to start on Thursday, or how the "weekend" in Japan is only Saturday and Sunday.

It's not like Friday is truly part of the weekend either, it's a regular workday. The only difference is that the next day happens to be part of the weekend, which allows more people to go out on Friday evening. By your reasoning, you would have to seperate the Friday from the weekend as well. Thus your comment about the long weekend could be send right back at you, because nowhere is Friday part of the regular weekend.

Of course, and I totally agree with you, I just don't appreciate the condescending tone taken in the previous post as it's stating something as a fact like that the earth is round when it's merely something handed out by a studio and accepted by, well, anyone who cares to accept it.

I loved Hidden Figures. I just think I am pretty clear on which movie won Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday at the box office and it wasn't Hidden Figures. But I fully understand the way previews are counted I just can't help but snicker in this particular unique case where a movie was already in release and they get to claim extra time that Rogue One didn't have to say "we're number one!" I wouldn't proclaim that if I were Fox. It's a lot like Trump saying he won by a landslide - what a joke, he lost the popular vote by like 3 million. It's fair if he wants to say he won by the rules of what we accept for the election, of course! He totally did (and I'm good with that; I'm not a liberal), but it's just wrong when he's trying to act like he won by any measure when he won because of our particular system of government. Just like HF "won" because somehow a movie already in release is allowed to count 5 extra hours to its gross that is literally the only reason (1.2 million reasons in fact) that it beat another movie that actually took 2 out of 3 weekend days. So forgive me for chuckling a bit at its "win" ;) I don't mean to be snarky I just find it funny.
