Baumer's live reaction to Hard to be a God | And some other people subject themselves to it as well

Uhhh...breaking the fourth wall is cool, but I don't think some of these actors are supposed to be breaking that wall.  They are staring into the camera and laughing.

I think only @CoolioD1 and maybe @Jake Gittes?

I still haven't actually.  Missed it in theaters, then bought the DVD but it's still just sitting there a couple years later.

I'm a fan of all of German's previous work though. I've already recommended it but Trial on the Road especially is just a cracking wartime thriller. No crazy experimenting there, it's short, clean and brutally effective. Twenty Days Without War and My Friend Ivan Lapshin are two of the greatest Soviet films too.

Just paused it.  I'm 40 minutes in and so far here's what I have picked up.

Don Ramata is a prince of some kind.  The ruler at least.

He rules over a village that persists of mud, water, mucus, blood and chickens.

There's been walking.

Servants are not trusted and people talk of hanging themselves or other people.

Black stuff is spread across people's faces.

There's a lot of really obese people in here

Someone is very upset that some kind of poetry was written.  I'm not sure why.

There's lots of chickens.

That's the first 40 minutes.

Don Ramata is a scientist from Earth. He's posing as a prince to observe the society there but he's been stranded/stuck there a long-ass time.

Remember, there's a camera crew following Don Ramata around to document what he sees (and him). It's a bit unclear but seems like sometimes it's a hidden camera and sometimes more overt. The uncultured, primitive peasants are gawking and reacting to that.

Was this explained somewhere?
