The event to end all events for animated films. Not only did it reach #4 of all time, its re-releases make the film adjust to $771m. Without re-releases, it's $646m.

It's truly, and I mean truly incredible to see that a re-release of a 20 year old film got nearly 100m unadjusted. And it was #1 for the first two weekends.

Only a few movies can do that nowadays.

There's something slightly sketchy were Disney removed this movie from theaters for two months, only to re-release it in the holidays. Can't do that in today's market.

The schedule is way too packed to pull a stunt like that these days. Although I could see a TFA re-release leading up to TLJ or something.

Correction: No movies can do that nowadays.

Does the market changed that much since 2011 ? I suspect you are right, the buzz around a 3D re-release had probably a 3/4 year's windows of 2009 to 2012.

All the big re-release happened during that time:

Opening a re-release at 30 million, is pretty hard to imagine now, we will need a new very popular technology before we get something similar happening again.

Between the nearly $1 Billion in movie box office, the 15 million Soundtrack copies sold, the nearly 60 million vhs/dvd/blurays sold (an untouchable record), and the $3 Billion in licensed merchandise sold over the years, the Lion King is arguably the single most profitable movie of all time.

Oh, and the play it spawned has done $6 Billion in business, the #1 play of all time.

Sheesh!
