John Marston
this movie showed the incredible star power of Tom Hanks it is about a guy stuck on an island by himself. Released in Christmas 2000, it made 233m which adjusts to 362m! Shows how "star power" today is laughable
filmlover
Remember how the trailer literally gave away the entire movie? Still love Cast Away, though. Wilson, that goddamn volleyball.
Jonwo
Zemeckis had a good year with this and What Lies Beneath. It's shocks me that Cast Away cost less than What Lies Beneath

Joel M
Tom Hanks definately deserves the credit for this but I think there was another thing that helped the movie reached those crazy numbers. Cast Away premiered right in the middle of the Survivor craze. Survivor season 1 finale aired at the end of August 2000 with 50m viewers and Survivor season 2 premiered after the superbowl 2001 to 45m viewers. Getting stranded on an island was all the rage in 2000-2001.
Webslinger
I was just thinking about this film and What Women Want the other day. With how drastically studio release strategies have shifted since then, it's hard to believe that two star-driven films aimed at adults completely dominated late December. This one even went higher than the most hyped action film of the preceding summer.
