How on earth was FB racist?

It's a movie set in New York right in the middle of the Harlem Renaissance and yet has no black people.

Did the original anime shit on fans cause that Major has blue eyes too.

Next thing you know people will be outraged Naruto is played by a blonde white kid.

The white-washing controversy is stupid. She's a robot in a post-racial, transhuman Japan. It doesn't matter if her ROBOT body has blue eyes (like the original anime, lol).

I think there should be more Asian, A-list superstars but this is the wrong hill to die on.

No.

If they cast someone white in a hypothetical movie, sure, because Naruto isn't white. (Edit: Actually, I have to claim ignorance here. I've never seen Naruto. But I'm making an assumption that he isn't white based on similar things elsewhere. i.e. Usagi Tsukino isn't white, despite the blond hair and blue eyes presentation.)

Dumb argument. They could cast someone Japanese and give her blue eyes. I've got a friend who regularly wears colored contacts and yet never stops being Asian. The world might be a fantasy, but the message it presents in the real world is a really, really shitty one. There isn't a way you can twist the whitewashing to be good. "Maybe she wanted to be white" isn't a good way to push it.

If not this hill, what one. Besides, we're looking at a pretty catastrophic bomb, so I think there isn't a realm where you can defend the film, either.

Idea: see the movie and find out.

I think I've adequately explained why that isn't going to happen, but to reiterate:

1. I've got a moral objection to the film.

2. Nothing I've heard about the film besides the whitewashing makes it sound good.

3. The trailers did nothing to convince me that it's visually appealing. i.e. they failed in the one aspect of marketing that people say is good.

I have not seen FB, but it's certainly possible to be set in NY and not feature Harlem at all.

Granted, you'd probably see African-Americans as servants, doormen, etc.

Then don't wonder why people like the visuals when you haven't seen it.

Are you saying they are significantly different than the visuals presented in the trailers?

They aren't. It looks nice but also if you've seen your share of Scott, the Wachowskis, cyberpunk in general, etc you've basically already seen the same thing.

We're supposed to take the white wash debate to the Ghost in the Shell thread.

That is fucking bullshit.

The movie was already bloated but you wanted it to shoehorn Harlem in even though it wouldnt have fit into the story or characters at all? Just so that the movie could pat black people on the back for the Harlem Reniassance or make a statement about racism?

Not everything is about race.

The point is New York in the 1920s wasn't all white, yet the film is. There were a lot of black people in New York at the time.

There were lots of other people in New York in the 1920s that werent in the film as well. Not including them doesnt make the film racist.

Yeah, that's what you'd see. But she had the President of the Magical Congress of the US a black female.
