Roman Israel, Esq. | Dan Gilroy, Denzel/Colin Farrell | 11/17/17 limited

Interesting, initial spin on this out of TIFF was a "mess" and a disappointment.

Looking at early reviews though they're OK, not award caliber certainly but not a disaster and Denzel is getting some good notices

Not all that different from The Battle Of The Sexes where the initial narrative was "Oscar for Emma"

They're better off giving this a wide Christmas release and squeezing as much as possible out of Denzel's starpower and the holidays. It might die a Billy Lynn death in November.

It's gonna be difficult for this (or any movie, for that matter) to do as bad as Billy Lynn because that movie made less than $2M in total. Denzel's one of the few remaining stars with actual drawing power so Collateral Beauty/Concussion numbers should be in the cards as both a best and worst case scenario.

If it opens immediately wide, sure. They should at least scrap the platform release with the average at best reviews.

Agreed, no reason not to open it wide.  There's no need to curate it and roll it to gain award traction and buzz.  It's not a specialty audience pic and it's Denzel - he has a built in audience that's probably more consistent and solid than any other actor's.

A Denzel drama can do better than Concussion or CB numbers - I'd think those would be worse case unless they give it some semi wide release.

They used TIFF as a test screening

EXCLUSIVE: The creative team behind the legal thriller Roman J. Israel, Esq is appealing for a retrial. After a Toronto International Film Festival premiere, the drama has been substantially reconfigured by writer/director Dan Gilroy and star Denzel Washington, to become what they feel is a much leaner, tighter and more focused drama. They dropped a dozen minutes from the running time, moved up a key scene, dropped another, and radically changed the musical backdrop. Sony opens the film in a platform run on November 10, broadening November 17 into a wide release for the Thanksgiving holiday.
