Director Martin Scorsese and star Leonardo DiCaprio appear to have a potential new project developing with Killers of the Flower Moon. According to Deadline, the pair are “seriously considering” a big-screen adaptation of New Yorker staff writer David Grann‘s just-released nonfiction book. Fully titled Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI, the book is officially described by publisher Penguin Random House as follows:

In the 1920s, the richest people per capita in the world were members of the Osage Indian nation in Oklahoma. After oil was discovered beneath their land, they rode in chauffeured automobiles, built mansions, and sent their children to study in Europe.

Then, one by one, the Osage began to be killed off. The family of an Osage woman, Mollie Burkhart, became a prime target. Her relatives were shot and poisoned. And it was just the beginning, as more and more members of the tribe began to die under mysterious circumstances.

In this last remnant of the Wild West—where oilmen like J. P. Getty made their fortunes and where desperadoes like Al Spencer, the “Phantom Terror,” roamed—many of those who dared to investigate the killings were themselves murdered. As the death toll climbed to more than twenty-four, the FBI took up the case. It was one of the organization’s first major homicide investigations and the bureau badly bungled the case. In desperation, the young director, J. Edgar Hoover, turned to a former Texas Ranger named Tom White to unravel the mystery. White put together an undercover team, including one of the only American Indian agents in the bureau. The agents infiltrated the region, struggling to adopt the latest techniques of detection. Together with the Osage they began to expose one of the most chilling conspiracies in American history.

This seems to be a great fit, both for Martin Scorsese and for Leonardo DiCaprio! The birth of the FBI? 1920s setting? It's like you mash The Departed and Wolf of Wall Street together!

Plus, Killers of the Flower Moon is the kind of title that has the power to magnetically pull moviegoers into the theater! Awesome-sounding title!

Book is fine, certainly a fascinating and important story, the writing and pace didn't exactly keep me glued to the page though.

Leo isn't a fit for the lead white dude character at all - he's like a Clint Eastwood type outlaw sheriff- but I guess that's what makes it more interesting. They better cast actual Native Americans in all the roles that call for it. The lead of the story isn't actually Leo's character but more a Native American woman - could be an incredible opportunity for representation.

WHat is interesting is that this case is one of the episodes in the 1960 James Stewart film "The FBI Story".But any Scorsese Crime drama has my interest.

I wonder who will play the James Stewart in "The FBI Story" role for this film.

De Niro said he and Scorsese are also teaming again for an upcoming film with Leonardo DiCaprio. He said the deal is done — “It's happening” — but he didn't divulge further details about the project.

I think it's safe to say this one's in development hell for the time being thanks to Scorsese's problems with The Irishman.

Is it the CGI thing or are there more issues?

I think it's the CGI thing, and because of that, scheduling conflicts, since this project was meant to start shooting this year.

DiCaprio's going to start shooting Nightmare Alley this September with Guillermo del Toro, so Killers of the Flower Moon definitely won't be starting this year.

I wanted "Devil in the White City" to be next, but this will also be pretty cool I guess...

"Devil In the White City" is like the Sinatra biopic..Scorsese keeps circling around it but never pulls the trigger.

Don't know when this starts filming, though;Di Capio has Del Toro's "Nightmare Alley" to finish first, that starts in September.

Just watched "Gangs of New York" the first film Di Capio did with Scorsese again. He's good, despite a dodgy Irish accent, but  Danile Day Lewis as Bill the Butcher totally dominates the film.

I think it was announced a few months ago that Devil in the White City will go forward as a tv show not a movie, which probably means Scorsese will only produce and maybe direct the pilot.

It's shame really, it sounded more intriguing than Killers of the flower moon as a concept.

Sinatra wasn't made because Scorsese wanted to show Sinatra's dark side and Sinatra's estate wasn't okay about that.
