Projection on boxoffice.com is down 25% on opening wknd and 40% on total gross just a week before the opening. I have not recalled anything like this for a long while. 

 

Damned! At one point I had a lofty expectation for this to shatter January opening weekend but roght now it only looks good enough to beat The Village.

I’m not trying to take away from how commendable it is that he made this with his own money, however spending $20mil for a sequel to your film that grossed $300m ww a couple years ago isn’t “ballsy.” It was literally impossible for this film to fail on that budget after Split’s numbers.

Saw it this morning and I can say - I think it's a bold direction to take, but it does make a kind of sense. It's certainly not as much of a mess as I expected it to be going in.

It’ll open just fine, but if fans and audiences really like it then it could have good legs. 

Would not be the first time we’ve had a word of mouth comic book hit after middling reviews from critics in the last twelve months.

It feels super cheap. Some major events feel like they didn't have enough shooting time to convey the proper amount of weight.

Also lots of people are gonna hate the ending and what Night is ultimately saying with these films.

It's a strangely paced film (so was Unbreakable though!) and one of its plot developments I could see didn't even play with a crowd of die-hard M. Night fans. But I found the movie consistently entertaining and really admired its ambition. I'd much rather filmmakers at this level of attention make these sorts of risks, many of which landed for me. The reaction will be mixed but it will have its ride-or-die supporters.

Whenever I see people talking about a potential blockbuster being polarizing and taking risks and all that jazz that just makes me believe that the film will have terrible word of mouth and legs at the box office.

Well yes, when a movie is divisive, the people that dislike it often times scream the loudest. But also often times divisive movies are the best of movies, because great art is not everyone and never will be.

I wasn't excited for this movie even though I love Glass and Unbreakable and I like Shyamalan, but now that critics hate it and the word divisive has been thrown out, I can't wait to see it. Those types of movies are usually the best. And are also the most influential ones because filmmakers who take risks may not always please the crowds and the simple minded critics, but are the ones who make a difference and are the most imitated, even though they usually don't get credit for it.

This is spot on.

 

Anyhow, Im not sure when I will actually get around to seeing this movie. Unbreakable is a great movie, but I havent seen Split yet.

I agree. I was interested since the announcement. After these bad to mixed reviews my interest decreased but that it's said to be a bold film which polarizes makes me indeed pretty curious again. Now I want to see what could be meant...and rewatching Unbreakable yesterday also helped.
