13th should be required viewing for everyone living the United States right now. Rarely has a film been able to put so clearly to light the issue of systemic racism, and how the legacy of slavery still echoes today and likely will forever in our nation. DuVernay directs a truly passionate documentary that should get most people righteously angry at many of our nation's presidents (including our current one), along with the history behind much of the horrendous policies that advocate elements of mass incarceration. It runs a bit long at the end, but that's really the only issue with the editing in this. 13th is a harrowing look at one of the major ways racism still exists within our societal complex today, and overall, is an excellent vehicle to bring these issues to light.
