Ryan Coogler’s hotly anticipated film, which features an almost entirely black cast, pulled in £2.67m on its opening day on 13 February, Disney said, delivering the highest-grossing single day at the UK box office this year.

This bests the opening days of fellow Marvel Studios offerings Thor: Ragnarok and Doctor Strange, starring Benedict Cumberbatch.

The best early performance comp in the deeper MCU is Doctor Strange as both movies opened on a Tuesday. Strange‘s ultimate first offshore weekend in like-for-like markets was $114M (at current exchange rates). Black Panther has a solid shot at beating that. Once Friday comes on line, the picture will be clearer.

Comparable to Justice League's 26.1 through Thursday not counting China's previews.  Considering BP is much better received than JL seems like it could match or beat JL's $135m overseas' start.

I am pretty sure that JL was in a lot more than 17 markets on its first Thursday.

3.11M total for Aus, 0.639M for NZ. Aus OW should be around 10.15M and NZ OW should end up around 2.05M. In other words, it's basically gonna do the same as Thor, which is great news because Thor did really well in both these markets.

First trends point at 400k admissions for the weekend in Germany. That's the second best first movie for a character among MCU-movies, behind GotG (463k) and ahead of Doctor Strange (364k). Doctor Strange ended with about 1.46m (20th of the year), Thor 3 finished with 1.48m (18th of the year) with a 400k opening, but that one also used a holiday to start early, which didn't count towards the weekend.

It will likely open in 2nd place behind the second weekend of FSoG3, at least in terms of admissions. Might be the other way round when it comes to money.

Last year comic book movies finished with 2.5m admissions (GotG2), 1.48m (Thor 3), 1.04m (Logan), 1m (Spiderman), 778k (Wonder Woman) and 620k (Justice League), so Black Panther seems to perform pretty well so far, at least for this kind of movie. It's not going to be particularly relevant when looking at the whole year though, but that's the norm anyway.

WOM in Asia looks incredible.

Doing better universally than Dr. Strange means 450 m OS is the floor.

In fact, due to an overperformance and good WOM in many places, I think 500-550 m OS is very much on the table (like Thor Ragnarok).

Which also means 1 billion WW is a very real possibility.

That would make Black Panther the biggest non-sequel for a solo superhero in history. And the first to cross 1 billion.
