Spidey .... :ohmygod:

How is its performance? Amazing? Spectacular? Superior?

Interesting to see Yesterday with such strong presales.

I saw it on Monday evening at a special screening. I personally was underwhelmed. First half sets up the movie greatly, the second half loses it's way to what I found to be an unsatisfying conclusion.

However, the music (of course!) is great and I certainly went home and downloaded much of the Beatles discography afterwards.

Kate McKinnon also gives a pretty good performance, though too brief.

But those ticket prices update are online online-buying, or or includes people who buy at the cinema too?

Pulse only tracks sales made through Fandango (as a subset subject to capping).

that should just be a regular drop. Disney can't just take Paramount's screens.

Well, technically they can.

No studio owns screens, that's not how it works. Usually there is a two week period in which theaters are contractually obligated to keep a film playing, after which they are free to drop the film as they please.

Those -411 for Rocketman could absolutely go to Endgame, if theatres so please.

Realistically though, Endgame's expansion screens will come from a variety of other films being pushed out i.e. Godzilla, Dark Phoenix, Rocketman, Secret Life of Pets 2, etc.

If I were a theatre owner, I wouldn't drop one of the highest performing films (Aladdin) over lesser earning films.

Last weekend Aladdin had the third best theatre average in the Top 10.

Considering that theatres earn a higher percentage of ticket sales the further into a run a movie is (with a few exceptions such as Star Wars and Avengers which were specially contracted at a higher rate throughout their runs), theatres want to keep higher performing films as long as they can as their profits are larger per ticket sold later in the run.

It does make me wonder if Disney waives it's higher rate for Endgame with this expansion to try and entice theatres to pick up the film once more...

I think it's a great premise, and when I saw that first trailer I was beyond excited, so it's been a disappointment to see so many reviews talk about the veer into limp rom-com territory in the film's second half. Still, I like Curtis's work, and I love The Beatles (still remember the thrill of watching them as a kid when they made their American debut on the Ed Sullivan show. My whole family was gathered around a black and white Philco tv set not much bigger than an I-Pad, and even my perennially square dad registered his approval afterwards 😂) so I will probably enjoy it, but I am definitely going in with lowered expectations.

I think that's probably the best approach, go in with lower expectations and perhaps be pleasantly surprised.
I think the biggest problem for me is that during almost the entire second half of the movie I had to contend with my thoughts on how much potential such a brilliant concept had, only to see it squandered and thrown aside in favor of a cheesy, and not at all inspiring IMO, love story.

If I summed correctly this is the first hour where FSS sales lead Yesterday, 3625 vs 3613. Still thinking Endgame’s walkup share this weekend will be abnormally low, but it’s definitely trending well with online sales.

Actually, since there won't be much of rush, many folks might be not bothering about online booking, costing another dollar or two?

They could just walk-in. Also I think some chains have started promos for purchase on their app, iirc, so those may not be featuring on Fandango as per my understanding.

Yesterday is selling really well around here too. Think it can hit lower teens at least. Won't be the breakout I thought it would be when the trailer first landed but could become a mini-Rocketman as a summer alternative, especially with a light schedule aside from Spidey, Lion King, and Hollywood throughout July.

Yesterday + The Lion King

Thursday Previews

(Featuring Friday AEG "Re-Release")

The Lion King
  2.24 6.26 Total % Sold
Lincoln Square 1002 1116 6472 17.24% 114
SM Cinemagic 12 37 2434 1.52% 25

  • I'm so proud of SMCM for actually having some tickets sold.  All came from the 7PM IMAX Screen.  I don't know if that was an Atom Error on Day One or not, but they're there now.

  • LS13 continues solid sales for its PLF theaters; the standard screens are way behind, and five of the showings after 9PM are empty.  Feels like it's playing like a family film.  I'm also not getting the rush factor.  Something to think about: if there's no fear of Spoilers, are people going to wait for "the best seats in the PLF theater"?  In the long runs, that's good.  PLF tickets cost more.  OW could not be so good?  Or it is too early to tell?  Just food for thought.

  • Slight bookkeeping note: I miscalculated the theater size on a couple of the standard theaters, to it's really 6472 seats available over 21 showings.  Which is still double Toy Story 4.

Lincoln Square 13
  2.24 2.26 Total %
Yesterday 182 344 682 50.43%
Avengers (Friday) N/A 206 922

22.34%

  • Yesterday, Yesterday sold out its single showing on Thursday.  Told they just added a 10:30PM show.

Southern Maine Cinemagic
  2.24 2.26 Total %
Avengers (Friday) N/A 53 438 12.10%
  • SMCM is not doing Yesterday Thursday previews.  Maybe they looked at the low Rocketman turn out and said, "We good."

  • The IMAX theater has Avengers, but we never lost it.  And they STILL have it in the dinky 35 seat theater.  DESPITE the entire weekend looking like 86 / 315 / 27% sold.  Which is basically sold out at place as walk-up driven as SMCM is.  They really should've moved it to a 70 Seat theater.  MIB and Pets have nothing sold for Friday.  Just sayin'.

858    2019-07-09    TUE    Spider-Man Far From Home (15)

Tomorrow will be the best day by a mile. if it sustains the pace seen in the past hour 15k+ can happen. Today it ended just under 8K(7968) but pace after the screening review came up is off the charts.

BTW, Toy Story 4 finished at 156 showings locally on preview night.  At the same point in time, it had 89 showings scheduled.

Just so folks have an idea of the bet local theaters are placing on TLK.
