The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Recommended Posts

Does it really make sense to post hourly updates here? People can easily look at it themself, and very few hours actually contain much in the way of new information.

Also, Deadline:

Quote

Disney’s The Lion King popped on tracking this morning, and even at a conservative level, there’s a chance this live-action remake of the 1994 pic beats the $169.1M opening of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 for the July opening record. Another leading tracking firm has The Lion King at a $150M opening.

I think it can hit 200 but we will see. Seems like a more traditional conservative tracking projection, hopefully they learned from TS4.

In regards to this story, it’s not really surprising. First choice above I2 and TS4, and equal to BATB. I imagine/believe once we get around FFH, it’ll ramp up even further as the demographics will start to swing towards parity and the marketing kicks into full gear.

As of tonight in NYC, it's going from 6 theaters and 11 showtimes on Thur to 15 theaters and 38 showings on Friday. (and 1 to 4 at my local) so it's expanding showtimes as well as theaters.   (just a bit less than 69 theaters and 900 or so showings for Thur previews)

As of this morning for Friday, it's now 69 showings in 23 theaters (and Lincoln Center went from 2 to 4 shows)

What about tickets sold?

I'll hopefully do a count on my local and maybe another theater tonight but for a quick glimpse the 11am at my local has sold 20 seats, twice as much as Yesterday for tonight at 7pm (and 5x it's Friday morning)

Aladdin Previews Tracking -- Wednesday, May 22 @ 730pm CST -- AMC Willowbrook 24

Dolby Cinema: 2 showings - 122 seats sold out of 410 (29.76%)
IMAX 3D: 2 showings - 43 seats sold out of 302 (14.24%)
Real 3D: 4 showings - 19 seats sold out of 402 (4.73%)
Digital: 3 showings - 83 seats sold out of 326 (25.46%)

Totals: 11 showings - 267 seats sold out of 1440 (18.54%)

Comp: Detective Pikachu on Wednesday - May 8, 2 days before opening - 280 tickets sold

I meant to check this last night, as I had suspected it to be true but I forgot. As of right now, TLK has outsold the final tracking for Aladdin and Pikachu at my theater. TLK currently sits at 328 tickets sold vs 280 for Pika and 267 for Aladdin.

The next major targets I have numbers for (that make sense) are TS4 @ 822 (Thursday at 330pm) and Captain Marvel @ 1140 (Wednesday at 530pm).

Pulse today 8:50-9:04 EST:

Yesterday: 84/15 – yesterday at that time it were 69/15, up 22%; The Hustle had at that time on Thursday 26/15, Long Shot also 26/15, The Sun Is Also a Star had 8/15 and Little 54/15. No big jump so far today but still comfortable in front of the comps.
Annabelle Comes Home: 51/15 – yesterday it were 45/15, up 13%; comps make no sense today.
A: E: 43/15

Midsommar: 2/15

And Pulse 10:50-11:04 EST:

Yesterday: 114/15 – yesterday 71/15, up 60% ; Long Shot (9.7M OW) had at that time on Thursday 42/15, The Hustle (13.0M OW) 60/15, The Sun Is Also a Star (2.5M OW) 7/15, Little (15.4M OW) 85/15 and The Upside (20.4M OW) 130/15. → I said I will be more careful and so I only expect that Yesterday reaches 15M+ this weekend.
Annabelle Comes Home: 110/15 – yesterday 90/15, up 22%. → This movie is really difficult to track! And its run so far irritated me too. On Tuesday it looked good for Annabelle in these coutings and the previews number was indeed nice, yesterday it did not increase and its OD was a bit disappointing (and so my guess that it will compensate that later in the day was wrong). Today it slightly increased but I'm not sure to what extend you can just compare its Wednesday numbers to its Thursday numbers. At least the Annabelles Comes Home tickets that I saw were for June, the 27th, not the weekend. But overall Annabelle did not have the increases I expected after the good Tuesday.
A: E: 90/15 – I don't know about walk ups but these numbers (both times almost on par with Annabelle) look of course very good.

Spider-Man: Far from Home: 180/15 – e.g. Shazam (53.5M OW) had ca. that number at 8:50-9:04 also on Thursday but 1 day before its release, Captain Marvel (153.4M OW) had 141/15 at the same time of the day on Thursday = 8 days before its release and 478/15 at the same time of the day on Monday. Would mean, if Spider-Man has roughly the same jumps it would have 612/15 on Monday but that's pure conjecture for fun.
Midsommar: 11/15

All these movies released within a very tight 4-months. You can check the schedule for 2020, 2021 or you can check the schedules for 2018,17 16 etc etc. You will never see such a stuffed 4 months summer. It's absolutely ridiculous. Compared to this summer the entire schedules of 2020 and 2021 you will find it pretty much empty. IMHO all these movies could have been spread across 2 years. I geninuely believe if some of the movies that flopped found themselves a better opening dates things could have been different and especially for Movies like Pika and King of the monsters + Pets 2

I would love to know your logic behind saying Pikachu flopped especially compared to all the films you're comparing it too.

Pikachu two weeks post Endgame when it was still a monster and had no IMAX screenings as well made 430 million WW. 142 DOM/287 OS

Meanwhile movies like Godzilla and Dark Phoenix whom have the benefit of IMAX and none of their screens being taken away

Godzilla - 103 DOM/263 OS = $367

X-Men - 61 DOM/172 OS = $234

So how is Pikachu consider a flop? Enlighten me please. It's right now the highest grossing film of WB this year and the highest grossing family film for WB since the first lego movie.

Pikachu just didn't go past our insane expectations for it but it did not flop.
