The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Not based on the last decade of box office. 4th of July tends to be down with a kink for the actual day of the week it lands on. Its weird to have a new release opening like Spidey so no guarantees but a drop of 10% from Wednesday would be a decent expectation to set.

TASM dropped 30% on the 4th

If the 4th is a Friday or Saturday it'll be a down day compared to normal bc night shows are light.  TASM dropped bc it was OD vs day #2.  Far From Home will go up on the 4th.  Look at July 2013 for comparison, almost every movie went up, and the ones that went down had theater losses mid-week which complicates the picture:

Decent chance I accidentally gave 20 extra tickets to TLK yesterday as one showing 'lost' 20 seats sold today, which was the exact number of one of the rows the showing in question had.  But it got 'deducted' out of today's total, so it's a wash in the end.  So it could be that TLK had 78 ticket sales yesterday locally (instead of 98) and 79 today (instead of 59).  No way to know, but in the end fairly irrelevant.

Figured out where I messed up on here.  Turns out I undercounted two showings by exactly 20 seats (must have missed one row when I was adding in my head).

It hadn't mattered until this point as I had been "counting down" (counting the seats sold) in those showings as opposed to "counting up" (counting the seats left).  What happened was two days previously I 'counted up' and yesterday 'counted down'.

When I was rechecking this showing after getting that 20 seat disparity again, I actually sat down to figure out what happened and soon sussed it all out.

I am going to edit the above post to reflect the actual number of seats sold (79) and the various percentages.  I will NOT go back and edit the previous posts as the actual number of seats sold (the most important number) hadn't changed and the various top line percentages aren't as important.

Sacto charts up in about 20 to 30 min, prob as I still have to do FFH.

EDIT:::  Post is now edited with correct seats sold and various percentages changed.  Mini explanation put in post.

TLK (JW) is the number of tickets sold at the same theaters I had tracking info for Fallen Kingdom.

@Porthos Finally increased relative to Aladdin & Toy Story 4, decreased relative to the other 3 again. It's interesting how closely it's following FK now (and on Pulse when it first launched before it went down). Hopefully it won't follow the same opening which the early tracking also suggested. At least it's still ahead overall. Seems like a 175-235 opening to me currently which matches BOP long range.

Great range. Hell I am I just gonna steal it and shave 10 off the top. 175-225.

Like Porthos said 175 would still be awesome and bring 500+. I hope for 600+ but it's gonna take a lot.

Since we have no Pulse, I wanted to track Day 1 shows in NYC. That is the most important market as these movies do really well. Its almost impossible to track as there are too many shows. But did for few theaters. Its selling good but not close to the point where we can say its close to running out of shows.

Also I have been tracking this since yesterday and so its not the latest data. That is impossible to do manually 🙂

Added several more theaters. Release these days are so wide that its hard to see sellouts. But quite a few shows are sold out beyond special seats. few plexes seem to push 3D really hard especially pre noon when ticket prices are low !!!. because its summer in certain plexes pre noon shows have better bookings than post noon.

Added 2nd theatre for comparisons. Yonge dundas still making gains. Both theatres selling well ahead of tuesday.

I can help but think we are seeing (for a lot of big ticket movies) that presales maybe more about seeing a movie pre social media spoiling. Movies where there isnt as much spoiling (aladdin for example) are more walkup because there isnt that spoil worry like a marvel or starwars film.

Just musing of course purely own speculation

Since we have no Pulse, I wanted to track Day 1 shows in NYC. That is the most important market as these movies do really well. Its almost impossible to track as there are too many shows. But did for few theaters. Its selling good but not close to the point where we can say its close to running out of shows.

Also I have been tracking this since yesterday and so its not the latest data. That is impossible to do manually 🙂

  Reveal hidden contents

Added several more theaters. Release these days are so wide that its hard to see sellouts. But quite a few shows are sold out beyond special seats. few plexes seem to push 3D really hard especially pre noon when ticket prices are low !!!. because its summer in certain plexes pre noon shows have better bookings than post noon.

Updated the post.
