The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Higher than Endgame would be quite something...

Also will see a 5k count some time, considering from 2010 to 2017 the highest opening was Eclipse with 4468 and then Despicable Me 3 opened in 4529 and this year Endgame pushed that count to 4662 theatres.

Before Eclipse it was Iron Man 2 with 4380 in the same year (2010)

Endgame was an April release tbf, but yeah it would be very impressive

Toy Story 4 had sold 712 seats 4 days before opening day

Should be able to add another 150 in the next 48 hours. Will give us a day-and-day comp of 1242/712 for a 74.4% increase over TS4. If it all played out the same afterward then true Friday would be around $62m.

Total from 7 theaters: 2253(+196)/18042 (12.2%)

I found these two theaters that I’m not tracking, a Century and AMC theater. Their ticket prices are a few bucks cheaper than other Century and AMC theaters I’m tracking. To no surprise, they are selling well. So, I’m gonna add them in because why not? But I’ll do that in a separate post, so it doesn’t look like Denver sales suddenly exploded.

From the original 7 theaters, there were 200 tickets sold. There has been this pattern of a relatively large increase in tickets sold, then the next day it is relatively small. This one is an extremely small jump, so maybe tomorrow there'll be an extremely large jump 😅

Any idea about PTA for TLK? Assuming it gets 4650 theaters. I2 and BATB both got around 41K. The 50K league comprises of 3 MCU: BP, IW, EG and 2 SW: TFA and TLJ. I think it'll settle in the ~45K range, which translate into 210M OW.

AEG is in it's own 75k+ league

Right now previews in the low 20s looks assured. A 9x multi probably gets it to $200-220m  so 45-50k looks about right

Huh. Seems like yesterday was an overperformance, as today came down to Earth and back to the levels of Wednesday and Thursday. I don't know if that's a good or bad thing, but I'll definitely admit that I would have preferred if the movie stayed closer to 305.

AMC Empire 25 (Lion King Previews)

Extremely strong on Dolby and Imax. Weird the 1st Imax show is just for 10PM. Have a feeling it will get a 7PM show as well before release. Not much demand for 2D/3D. But that should be walk up driven.

Overall PS not SH level but otherwise awesome.

Like what @CoolEric258 saw in Philly, it was def slower today in Sacto (last four days were +279, +330, +289, and +382).

However I just think it was the social media/review embargo boosts fading a bit and the ramp up that occurs the week of release not quite starting up yet.  Think of it as two waves and just as the embargo lift(s) waves start to recede, the week-of ramp up is just about to arrive.  They just didn't quite arrive simultaneously.

That being said, +259 for the day is an excellent number.  Just not perhaps a world smashing one.

The next big test comes over the next couple of days as the ramp up to release night begins in earnest.

That audience score is going to be SO critical. Beyond critical-pins and needles come Thursday and Friday.  It will be a complete mandate from the "people" about these digital animals and the choice to sacrifice emotion/personality (the meat and potatoes of the original) for realism (a new direction in film making which will either continue or be quickly stunted).

London premiers are coming soon too.

That audience score will also heavily affect the trend through the weekend. This is going to be a very interesting week.
