The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Recommended Posts

This is coming from somebody who is not a horror guru (haven't even seen the first IT lol), but I feel like the buzz for It 2 doesn't feel as strong or in-your-face as it was for the first movie. At the same point in time, it felt like It 1 was everywhere and everyone was talking about it. But now, it's just kind of another blockbuster. Kind of like Secret Life of Pets where the first movie's buzz was astonishing, but the sequel was much less. That's not me saying it will drop as bad as Pets. People actually still care and are interested in IT, so Chapter 2 definitely won't open to less than half of the first movie, but...I dunno, marketing just doesn't make the movie feel like a real must-see like the first movie was. But again, I'm not in the horror/King/IT fandom, so what do I know? Would love to be proven wrong.

And to quote the laughing guy from that Rise of the Planet of the Skywalkers trailer, "Something Something Something Mickey's Law. Something Something Something Complete."

Not really sure what to use as a comp for this film, since as I understand it horror isn't that pre-sale heavy.  Maybe.  For now, gonna throw in a few recent ones along with JW2 and DP2 and hope for the best.

IT1 did 9.15x the previews over ow.

IT2 may do close to 8x as a sequel. Needs at least 12 previews to keep 100 ow alive imo.

But IT walkups was also affected by hurricane Irma. It would have had a 10x+ internal mutliplier without the hurricane. This could be one of the few cases where the sequel doesn't have much of a decrease in terms of internal multiplier.

Not that I think it’s indicative of anything coming too soon, I have noticed Fandango is starting to push alerts for TROS.....

@Porthos 👀

Im really interested in seeing how the people respond to the movie. Like it will make a billion im pretty sure but how much more is what im curious about

IT was well recieved so i dont see the sequel making less than part 1. I think as a result i think its more a "yes x amount will see it anyway" just maybe not opening day or weekend, unless spoilers really hit the net. Ill say it may have a solid but not spectacular ow but legs will carry it.

Quote

In celebration and support of Women’s Equality Day, Atom Tickets surveyed women to ask about their movie and genre preferences, as well as their opinions about gender representation in the entertainment industry.

Female movie fans revealed their top picks for movies set to release later this year. Overall, women are most excited to see the following top ten films in theaters:

  1. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
  2. Jumanji: The Next Level
  3. It Chapter 2
  4. Frozen 2
  5. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil
  6. Joker
  7. Hustlers
  8. The Addams Family
  9. Terminator: Dark Fate
  10. Downton Abbey

Atom did a similar survey last year. For comparison's sake, the top three (there were only three that first year) were Aquaman, Venom, and Crimes of Grindelwald.

Also from Fandango, the results from upcoming openers for this week

Movie/Day Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday
The Nun 462 534 630 700
Peppermint 36 33 60 75

The Predator 87 82 76 77
A Simple Favor 7 12 11 8
Unbroken 2 9 10 9 13
White Boy Rick 0 0 1 1

House w/ Clock 0 2 11 6

I tried to find JW2's presales two weeks before release to compare to The Nun (franchise horror) but no luck, maybe I'm blind?

Here's the week of release:

Jurassic World 2 9,310 12,761
23,266

The Nun 2,082 5,938 13,806

For those three days the nun was more presale heavy relative to the OW.

Normally I'd say horror would be at least as walkup friendly as Fallen Kingdom but to me IT2 seems like it should be more in line with The Nun, if not more presale heavy.  Though to be fair the heavier part of presales is likely closer to release, this week and next week, compared to JW2.
