The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

The range among these comps is tightening even with the low and high end included.  But toss those out and it's just a bit over $1m ($8.85-10.04m)

I was personally thinking around 9 to 11 as a range, but that sounds pretty good as well.  Only reason I was thinking 11 as an upper bound is I think there might be a bit more growth left for It 2 over the next couple of days, as a lot of 7/8pm showtimes were added that weren’t there before.

For whatever reason, the 5pm showings just aren’t doing anything at all.  In fact, for a while the 9pm showings were doing better than the 5pm ones at some theaters! Not by a lot, but still noticable.

  •  Rambo: Last Blood set to open between $21M-$24M on Sept. 20
  • Ad Astra which is depending on older males and females. That $87M-plus estimated production is expected to only gas up between $17.5M-19M
  •  Downton Abbey which is on fire in pre-sales ahead of Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! is only estimated to open between $15M-$16M
  • stripper caper Hustlers is still looking great on tracking reports with an anticipated 3-day of $26M when it opens on Sept. 12

Wow, that is a huge expansion for FFH. It’s in the pretty awkward position where exactly the sort of fans who would repeat view a CBM movie over 4 minutes of new footage are not feeling very positively about Spider-man right now. Think the PTA might go real low.

I quickly glanced at showtimes in NYC and while theater count is huge, show count not so much. Most plexes have spidey on 2 shows(evening) and while morning shows going to Toy Story 4. It has 3 shows Lincoln Square Imax except prime time 7PM show which has gone to Once Upon a time in hollywood.

Definitely its going to have a mediocre PTA(as will Toy Story 4) but fan base could still check out the 4 minutes boosting the gross this weekend. Could Spidey gross like 5m over 4 days?

Toy Story could do like 2-3m over 4 days but as I said earlier it has no milestones to aim for. So I wonder why Disney expanded it so much.

It's just something Disney does. No matter if there's a milestone or not, Disney always expands their Pixar movie. Just an odd tradition they have

Disney has long re-expanded one or two of their summer releases over Labor Day weekend for most part of the last 20 years. Dinosaur/Gone in 60 Seconds in 2000, Atlantis/Pearl Harbor in 2001, The Avengers/Brave in 2012, etc. It's just a thing a do. Can't blame them when there's almost always literally nothing opening over this holiday weekend as everyone says bye bye to summer and hello to the fall/holiday season.
