Not really sure what to use as a comp for this film, since as I understand it horror isn't that pre-sale heavy.  Maybe.  For now, gonna throw in a few recent ones along with JW2 and DP2 and hope for the best.

The thing with It was, that the hype left a bigger impression, than the movie itself.

The marketing just isn't able to reach the audience, that usually wouldn't see horror movies, for another time here.

Will still be a big hit.

It:1 had almost 200 million trailer views in the first 24 hours. That's a crazy number for anything that is not a big Disney tentpole. You can argue that even its $700 million WW total was a bit "disappointing" compared to the initial hype.

It had no China release too, really close to a Thor Ragnarock or Guardian 2 performance in similar markets.

You can’t argue that IT:1 was a bit “disappointing”. It wasn’t tracking anywhere near 120M OW/330M DOM, and broke Horror movie records all over the world.

Tracking result started quite after that first 24 hours event, tracking could be part of someone disappointment after that initial buzz.

And other to see how big it got, almost tripled the September OW :

Rank Title (click to view) Studio Opening* % of Total Theaters Average Total Gross^ Date**
1 It WB (NL) $123,403,419 37.7% 4,103 $30,076 $327,481,748 9/8/17
2 The Nun WB (NL) $53,807,379 45.8% 3,876 $13,882 $117,450,119 9/7/18
3 Hotel Transylvania 2 Sony $48,464,322 28.6% 3,754 $12,910 $169,700,110 9/25/15
4 Hotel Transylvania Sony $42,522,194 28.7% 3,349 $12,697 $148,313,048 9/28/12

Rank OR# Title (click to view) Studio Lifetime Gross* Year^
1 45 The Passion of the Christ NM $370,782,930 2004^
2 49 Deadpool Fox $363,070,709 2016
3 54 American Sniper WB $350,126,372 2014
4 66 It WB (NL) $327,481,748 2017
5 68 Deadpool 2 Fox $324,591,735 2018^

And lot of those views were not youtube type of views:

http://www.boxofficereport.com/trailerviews/owyoutuberatios.html

It's OW to YT ratio of over 2.4 isn't weak at all.

In what universe is $700M for a horror movie in any way "disappointing?"

No comps, what’s the point ;)

Actually I do wonder a bit about how useful a comp It2 will be for Joker. Both R-rated WB clown movies that could open in a roughly similar range. It is from a generally not presales loaded genre, but a sequel to a movie that was heavier on the presales. Joker is from a genre that’s often very presales heavy, but a non-sequel and perhaps aiming at a less presales heavy market segment. Curious to see how it shakes out.
