The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Recommended Posts

Off the board for most of the day, so I missed @Jedi Jat's comment (and I haven't caught up with most posts made here, prob read them later).

Showtime count for Frozen 2 is pretty healthy for this far out... But it isn't showing at two of the theaters I might expect it to be at.   Now Disney flicks don't always max out the theaters here, especially if they are rival brands near each other (say a Regal and a Cinemark within a couple of miles of each other).  But sometimes they'll waive that to juice up showtimes.

The one notable eyebrow raiser is that the local SMG only has one showing up.  Now they usually only have two or three at this stage, so whateveas.  But that showing is nearly sold out, so I'd expect them to go ahead and add that second showing before they get to their full slate later.

With all of that out of the way:

Recent Family Films at 11 days out (ie last night).

Pika Pika: 75 showings

Aladdin:   70 showings

TS4:         90 showings

TLK:       191 showings

F2:         118 showings

TLK was freaky on the level of showings.  But I've been commenting all year long, starting with Captain Marvel. about how theaters are goosing up the showtimes for anything they think might be catching lightning in a bottle.  Or are just plain desperate for butts in the seats in the case of Joker.

Either way, super sized TS4 at the moment might be the best way to look at it.  If I had a Incredibles 2 comp, I'd give it as I still think that's the best comp on the board.  But, alas, I don't.  So the above will have to do. :)

at Sacremento the show count is not that different except TLK but at Empire 25/Lincoln/Metreon 16 the difference is HUMONGOUS.

Empire 25 - 6 vs 40

Lincoln Sq - 3 vs 33 (though there could be 6PM Imax pulled out)

Metreon no shows on thursday listed !!!! TLK at Imax, Dolby, 2d and 3D.

As I said just 1529 reserved shows at AMC is incredibly low. friday/saturday are good but at Mal 2 level for now. For example Joker had 6000+ shows by the time it released for saturday. SW9 already has 5198 shows listed.

At last I have some macro data from AMC for F2.

F2 Day 2(since I thought this would be most important day from OW perspective).

overall 3535 shows 64675/742277  post 6PM 1650 shows 15204/350817

Special Dolby Screening(103 shows) - 8738/19724

Overall - 73413/762001

Just above Cinemark Day 2. normally Cinemark is like 60% of AMC. Still big numbers considering there is 12.5 days to go for D2 shows.

Very healthy numbers, even if Cinemark and AMC had usual ratios it would still be beating TLK at this point.

So, with the weird Frozen showing sets and sales at AMCs...does anyone wonder what contract Disney might have had theaters sign to get the movie?  Might the low showings and screen counts actually be b/c Disney is requiring an enormous 1st weekend take, a large time screen hold (each screen it gets must hold 4 weeks or something), or something else onerous...and theaters want to really see results from presales before going all in?

That is possible. Chains might do it for SW9 or Avengers but not for F2. Plus this is not a good time for Plexes to block huge number of shows for a movie considering how many releases happen over December. Jumanji 2 is releasing after 3 weeks and that will get a big release and then Disney's own SW9 opens.

Otherwise I dont understand why its so low. But things could still change by next week. Let us wait and watch.

What's really strange is AMC got a Fan Event exclusive on Saturday.

Ok, fair enough on the debate of one hour earlier showing on Thr vs super early showing on Sat.  Whaeveas.  Not gonna take part in that.  But AMC has that Dolby Event on Sat, it's just super odd for them to have low showtimes everywhere else.

If folks see what I am saying.

The Saturday makes sense since school is in and that's their biggest fan base.  The AMC exclusive - not so much.

There's been a lot of films released in the last couple of weeks and there's going to be a lot of screen drops - so there's going to a lot more open showings that can be booked.  Frozen is primarily a family movie so it's still going to be very walk up heavy - there's really not a rush to get all the preview shows online two weeks ahead.

I did an OD count for Frozen 2 to see how far ahead of previews it is. As of almost 2 hours ago, it was at 1646 tickets sold. Which is 141% of previews. Pretty far behind the Cinemark data from @keysersoze123, which had OD at 161% of previews as of yesterday. But still looks really good.

TLK did. Though one could say that had 25. years of anticipation built in and so played more broadly than a famly movie and that made its OW more frontloaded than a typical family movie.

To add to the Frozen post, my area is heavily AMC. Previews are about 70%, and OD is about 67%. So, I wanted to see if there was a notable difference in the OD/Previews ratio vs the Cinemark data.

Can you message me AMC theaters you track. i can send you saturday numbers for you to extrapolate.

Edit: if its just the 2 theaters you posted above then saturday is at 1570/7107(41 shows).

It was front loaded because it kinda sucked as well. If Frozen 2 is awesome it will have awesome legs. Like WW, Aquman, Joker, TS4, Aladdin etc.

Salt Lake Preview Night update for Salt Lake City Cinemark Sugarhouse, Ford vs Ferarri and Charlie's Angels.

Ford vs Ferarri

Two showtimes (but neither is ideal; 6:00 and 9:25 PM)

Total tix sold 20/214

Charlie

Three showtimes

Total tix sold 1/186

After Doctor Sleep I feel gun-shy about predicting anything anymore, but FvF has good awareness around here and I could easily see it doing Rocketman or Downton Abbey numbers. Charlie is absolutely stillborn, but if PWF can open to $12M I suppose this can too.

Will update Thursday afternoon.

Yelp reviews aren't everything, of course.  But they're not nothing, either.
