The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Recommended Posts

Just Mercy, counted today at 11am EST:

NY (AMC Fresh Meadows 7): 15 (total tickets sold for Thursday) / 66 (total tickets sold for Friday, 5 showtimes)
Boston (AMC Assembly Row 12): 7 / 26 (4 showtimes)
Boston (Boston Common 19): 9 / 29 (4 showtimes)
Miami (AMC Sunset Place 24): 3 / 26 (4 showtimes)
Grand Rapids (AMC Grand Rapids 18): 7 / 17 (4 showtimes)
Austin (AMC Lakeline 9): showtimes): - / 2 (4 showtimes)
Tempe/Phoenix (AMC Center Point 11): 0 / 2 (4 showtimes)
San Francisco (AMC Metreon 16): 158 / 122 (3 showtimes)
LA (AMC Bay Street): 40 / 65 (5 showtimes)
LA (AMC Universal): 7 / 8 (4 showtimes)
Total tickets sold in 9/10 theaters till today for Thursday: 246 and for Friday: 363.

Comps: 21 Bridges had at that time 250/366 sold tickets, The Art of Racing in the Rain 97/118, Richard Jewell 0/212 and Black and Blue 182/202.
I only had a short look at it yesterday but I think this was a very good jump in the last 24h (also due to the added showtimes). E.g. 21 Bridges had a far smaller jump from Tuesday to Wednesday.
So at the moment I would say that 10M+ are not unrealistic at all.

Underwater, counted today at 11am EST:

NY (AMC Fresh Meadows 7): 33 (total tickets sold for Thursday) / 24 (total tickets sold for Friday, 5 showtimes)
Boston (AMC Assembly Row 12): 23 / 41 (5 showtimes)
Boston (Boston Common 19): 9 / 10 (5 showtimes)
Miami (AMC Sunset Place 24): 18 / 9 (4 showtimes)
Grand Rapids (AMC Grand Rapids 18): 13 / 5 (4 showtimes)
Austin (AMC Lakeline 9): showtimes): 8 / 4 (4 showtimes)
Tempe/Phoenix (AMC Center Point 11): 5 / 9 (4 showtimes)
San Francisco (AMC Metreon 16): no showtimes so far
LA (AMC Bay Street): 16 / 24 (5 showtimes)
LA (AMC Universal): 54 / 44 (5 showtimes)
Total tickets sold in 9 theaters till today for Thursday: 179 and for Friday: 170.

Comps: Charlie's Angels had on Wednesday 218/398 sold tickets, Terminator: Dark Fate 1.233/1.847, Crawl 261/209, Countdown 170/131.
The normally pretty crowded theater in San Francisco is still missing but overall it doesn't look very promising anyway, at least so far.

Tomorrow 1917.

2nd local (Regal) set...life is very hectic here, so I'll put the highlights...

In good news for 1917, it gets MORE than 1 screen here, with 1.5 set (with two screens for the 7pm and later showings)...in bad news, it doesn't get the biggest screens, but the above average ones.

In no good news for TROS, it also gets dropped to 1 screen and 4 showings here...and I think Jumanji actually has the biggest screen for the weekend (with TROS getting the 2nd biggest).  I'm gonna have to actually count seat by seat, and maybe disability seats make these theaters even, but I think Jumanji has the biggest screen by about 10-15 seats.  They are both in the 2 biggest, each getting 1, and I'm sure the theater has figured out how to make the seating count the same...but just sayin...obviously, TROS will be leaving here 1st...

In other news, this theater is doing well with Like A Boss presales and that gets a bigger single screen than Just Mercy and Underwater (in size order).

And lastly, Cats, Bombshell, and Uncut Gems will also be gone next weekend...all get a single showing, just b/c (well, probably just b/c they have nothing yet better and don't want to go all in on 1917:)...

Question to your comment, dropping SW to 4 showings would be normal with its running time. Assume it was doing maybe 5 before? Know the theaters around me (outside the city) have only had it at 4, but hours arent early enough for a 5th one thats not super late. So just more curious if thats been the norm for others. And of course I do mean per screen which means the total shows per day are gutting 😂😂

Nah, it was doing 12 on both for last week since the theaters had nothing better (aka - it had 3 screens at both 12s)...now, it has 4 showings and 1 screen at each...it will drop very soon b/c the restrictive contract is over, and at 65% revenue, these theaters get enough traffic on their small screens that when it's moved to lower footprints (the 60 seaters), they'll be able to make as much with Jumanji and Little Women in seat sales and thus keep more revenue...both theaters booked 4+ movies this week they will have to hold next weekend, and have the next 2 (Doolittle and Bad Boys) booked next week, so they'll have to start making choices on Knives Out, Frozen 2, Jumanji, TROS, Spies, and Little Women for the MLK weekend...I see them both making the choice to live without TROS by that weekend (or at the latest, the next) since they both were quick droppers of Solo and TLJ (due to being stuck with the large screen commitments for both that went largely empty weeks 3 and 4)...

I think the small and midsize will be moving on to new product and leaving the malls and large complexes to hold and make the last revenues from TROS...I mean, I don't expect Disney to drop from the 65% in weekend #5...do they ever renegotiate, when staying firm probably holds Frozen or Spies instead, 2 movies that are also theirs?

Decided to add in a couple more black-led comps, since a Haddish vehicle probably will mean a Philly overperformance. Today's sales were inflated by Girls Night Out showings, but hey, that's still money for the movie. We'll see how things turn out, though its reviews are definitely making me go "hmm"

Have presales for Bad Boys 3 started yet?

Started a long time ago. Sales have been pretty decent so far, about 5 times more than Dolittle, though of course I'm tracking Big Willie's home turf, so there's bias here.

1917 update(MTC1)

1917 Prev - overall 748 shows 22635/128276 347946.07

1917 OD - overall 2083 shows 28162/393845 435101.13

Good increase and let us see where it end up by end of day. I am thinking 50-55K tickets in MTC1 and that should be good for 3.5m previews.

It would be a great start.

Last January Glass opened to 40M after 3.7M previews. I know that opening was inflated due to MLK, but previews also were big (fans anxious to see third film of Unbreakable saga).

Going to be hard for me to pull reasonable comps for 1917 since it's selling out its early evening shows already (old people in Victoria would rather wait until tomorrow than stay up until 10) but whatever number I get tonight it could have done A LOT more.

Just Mercy, counted a bit earlier today, had 318/510 sold tickets. For comparison, 21 Bridges had on Thursday 346/475 sold tickets, Black and Blue 244/262.

Underwater, also counted a bit earlier, had today 239/260 sold tickets in still 9 theaters (without San Francisco). For comparison: Charlie's Angels had on Thursday 344/550 sold tickets (without SF 246/383), Crawl 417/334 (without SF 326/251).

1917, counted today at 11am EST:

NY (AMC Fresh Meadows 7): no showtimes (!)
Boston (AMC Assembly Row 12): 175 (total tickets sold for Thursday) / 269 (total tickets sold for Friday, 6 showtimes)
Boston (Boston Common 19): 139 / 189 (10 showtimes)
Miami (AMC Sunset Place 24): 124 / 280 (7 showtimes)
Grand Rapids (AMC Grand Rapids 18): 35 / 53 (4 showtimes)
Austin (AMC Lakeline 9): showtimes): - / 44 (4 showtimes)
Tempe/Phoenix (AMC Center Point 11): 69 / 77 (4 showtimes)
San Francisco (AMC Metreon 16): 287 / 229 (10 showtimes)
LA (AMC Bay Street): 131 / 182 (9 showtimes)
LA (AMC Universal): 364 / 377 (9 showtimes)
Total tickets sold in 8/9 theaters till today for Thursday: 1.374 and for Friday: 1.700.

Comps: Midway had on Thursday 398/497 sold tickets, Angel has Fallen 654/580 and Ford v Ferrari (31.5M OW) had 1.116/1.516 (without NY 1.001/1.360).
So (also) in my theaters it's in front of F v F. Both movies counted without NY would at the moment indeed mean an OW for 1917 of ca. 40M.
And if it would follow AHF or Midway walk up-wise it would do great anyway.

Next Week releases at MTC1

Dolittle - overall 494 shows 1320/86370 19068.76
Bad Boys - overall 635 shows 3350/148222 55325.20

Bad Boys should easily win the weekend. But not sure if either movie is breaking out big.

Another Update

Dolittle - overall 519 shows 1659/89985 23944.53
Bad Boys - overall 681 shows 6669/158567 106163.90

This does not look like a contest. Bad Boys could do well considering there is more than a week to go.
