it can still beat it, at the same time our range here was 3-4 mill , with the average being around 3,5 mill , so pretty close , we will see when the actuals come ,

Pika made 5.6 in it's previews. Sonic made 2.6 less then that.

Depends on walkups and WOM. Sonic could have a lower OW but bigger DOM.

Depends on second weekend drop I guess. Sonic has way less competition then Pika did but depending on what it does this weekend plus the drops will ultimately determine things.

Pika made 144M DOM.

I doubt Sonic is touching Pika's WW. Not enough popularity for Sonic OS.

So much for it beating Pikachu. Which was what people are saying around here.

Celebrate good video game films, it's only good for the genre and God does the genre need good movies.

one's opening in a dead February, the other in a crowded summer season sandwiched between nearly 4 billion worth of Disney fare. Previews are much stronger in summer months anyways. I'm still confident in Sonic coming close to DP's OW in its 4-day opening, and from there it's got a good shot at reaching Pika DOM

This is exactly why comparisons between the two is not sustainable. Pikachu opened up with a ridiculous amount of competition including the highest grossing film of all time. Not to mention new blockbusters week after week after week. Sonic meanwhile's only competition is the lowest rated opening in the DCEU. It's next competition is a Pixar film getting zero buzz and a Disney live action that is doing everything possible to turn off domestic audiences while catering every which way to a country that is not even bothering going to theaters for a very good and serious reason. Wow Sonic's 4 day matching Pikachu's 3 day. So it couldn't match Pikachu's 4 days...good to know.

None of these comparisons work, and in every which way possible Pikachu beats Sonic by a landslide. And that's with the amount of ridiculous competition Pikachu had.

Just celebrate good video game films and hope this is a positive step forward for the genre.

Also this is a thumbs up for Paramount.

your conclusion there makes no sense. Sonic has all the advantages. Pikachu beats sonic in "every which way possible". I don't know if you mean in terms of your opinion of the two movies, but the only actual box office figures we have are Thursday previews so maybe lets slow down the hyperbole and keep opinions on franchises in their respective threads

It makes as much sense as you saying Sonic's 4 day is a comparison to Pika's 3 days. Why not do Sonic's 4 days with Pika's 4 days.

I don’t think anyone really cares about Sonic vs Pikachu box office wise. I’d be more happy about Paramount having a hit.

There's been a lot of Sonic V Pika literally in every thread. The last 3 pages of the Sonic thread for example.

Paramount having a hit is what matters. Any studio besides Disney being successful is a good thing.

Because Pikachu didn't have a national holiday on Monday?

I remember you started panicking almost like this when Pika released too, eventhough the numbers here will end up being better for a film with this budget.

DP was expected to do $1b, and to be the big break-out of last summer. Sonic was expected to flop till few weeks ago. Sonic is a far bigger story than Pikachu.

Plus, Pikachu carries one of the biggest brand in the world, the same can't be said about Sonic. DP's numbers were a disappointment.

Cause Pika didn’t open during a four day weekend. I don’t get why you’re so transfixed on if Sonic outopens Pikachu.

On a side note I’m curious about demographics, if Sonic where to follow it’d be looking at O/U a $30M OW, but if it plays more family friendly like Dragon 3, a $50M OW could happen.

According to Posttrak:

Quote

Of those who showed up, 60% were general audience, 40% were parents and kids. Boys under 12 outnumbered girls, 69%-31%. Definite recommend was 66% for general audiences, 72% from parents and 82% from kids — all great scores.

Pikachu was 32% under 18 and HTTYD 3 was 36%.

A lot of box office tracking has to do with historical comparisons. We try to find comparable movies, and we use those as gauges to determine what sort of run we can expect from a movie. And no comparison is perfect. None of us here really care if Sonic out-opens Pikachu (an arbitrary number). All we care about is good and exciting box office.

Pikachu was a family movie with the legs of a CBM. Sonic might perform more like the family movie it is supposed to perform like.

Literally the only place where Pika's numbers are considered disappointment is this forum. Anywhere else the film is considered a success. Sonic wouldn't survive where Pikachu was and that's a fact.

DP was on track with what WB predicted it would make and it was easily there most successful non R rated film of the year.

Anyways Paramount needs this cause they haven't gotten much in the W column and this is a breathe of fresh air for them.

A fact? Based on what? Sonic garnered tons of buzz after the redesign and it skewed way younger than Endgame and perhaps younger/broader than Pikachu too (definitely less fan-driven for sure). Who's to say it wouldn't perform just fine amongst that crowd of competition anyway? You act as if this Valentine's Day/President's Day frame is the film's savior, but the movie could have easily bombed even in this spot it's opening on. Did you not see what happened to Birds Of Prey last week, a movie that had zero competition to deal with?

I note that the video games film that seem to do well in the US are those that are comedy oriented and don't take themselves too seriously.

Maybe the problem was that previous video games movies...aside from the black eye they got from the Uwe Boll days...is they took themselves a bit too seriously?
