The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

I wouldn't worry too much about Paramount. They have a number of movies with potential (A Quiet Place 2, Spongebob, Top Gun 2, Infinite, Without Remorse, The Trial of Chicago 7, Clifford, Coming 2 America, The Tomorrow War) coming up this year while next year they have the next Mission: Impossible movie and the newest movies from Chazelle and most likely Scorsese if his is shooting soon. Every studio goes through a dry spell every now and then: look at the comeback Sony has made in recent years after a few rough ones, for example.

Now that the ViacomCBS merger has happened, the studio is now in steady waters.

I have been hearing that this movie could breakout. But no signs from PS perspective.

I guess we won't get an actually well performing horror film until Quiet Place 2. I expected that The Invisible Man would underperform though. The trailers were garbage (made the movie look like a generic horror film) and Blumhouse marketing has been weak over the past year. The only reason I'm hyped for the film is because of Leigh Whannell and Elisabeth Moss. I wouldn't have seen the movie at all if I didn't know who they were and only saw the trailers.

Under indexed all weekend, but that Sunday hold is something.

The Invisible Man is tracking for a $20M+ debut based on tracking so I wouldn't expect pre-sales to be impressive. If reviews/WOM are good it could have solid legs for a $60M total, which would be good news for the horror genre after all the garbage so far this year.

A bunch of theaters are having 3:00 showings for Onward the Saturday of that weekend (the week before it opens). One has to assume Disney's not too thrilled with the tracking numbers for the movie.

I mean, Disney HAS to realize these numbers are entirely their fault. They've got a movie coming from the most reputable animation studio in the world with two of the biggest names in Hollywood right now attached, with a unique premise and (other than sonic) a largely barren family movie landscape.

I'm sure some people are already predicting doomsday for this movie with 0 tickets sold 2 days in a row, but it's important to know that we're still a couple weeks away, and the advance screenings the week prior will limit much interest in buying tickets now. We'll see how this coming week turns out, though I do hope sales happen sooner rather than later.

So I just did a quick check of the Feb 29th showings for Onward. 118 tickets sold vs 35 as of yesterday for Thursday previews in Denver. That’ll definitely affect how Thursday looks. I wonder if it looks similar nationwide. @keysersoze123, could you run numbers for the advanced Saturday showings?

Sure will do. i did not see lots of shows earlier. Let me check and revert back.

Edit: it seems there are 2 different kind of shows in 29th. Advance screening and a marathon show. I had earlier checked for Marathon and there are very few shows for that. Anecdotally the advance screenings are doing good. But let me get the numbers.

Onward Advanced Screening(2/29)

MTC1 - 1450/17212 5283.16 (98 shows)

MTC2 -  2678/11378 24908.25 (101 shows)

Marathon shows have sold 51 tickets at MTC1(3 shows) and 48 tickets at MTC2(2 shows).

I hope the showcount goes up. Otherwise the numbers are small probably looking at 500K gross with advanced screenings.

Edit: I would ignore $ value as some of the shows returned ticket price as $0 at MTC1.

Pretty decent, relatively speaking.  Not a single zero tickets sold day (though there were a pair two ticket days along with a four ticket day) with a couple of double digit days sprinkled in for good measure. Only a matter of time before Sacto joins the zed club, but so far Han and co are fighting the good fight.
