The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Recommended Posts

Few insights:

  • If ITH can increase sales by at least 29% tomorrow, its Thursday/Friday sum of sales will exceed that of The Conjuring 3's on the Wednesday prior to release. Not the best comp, but hey, I just started this!
    • Another note, a local AMC has a dolby screen that has sold 5 tickets on Thursday and 71 on Friday, with one and two showings per day respectively.
  • One day ahead of time, Peter Rabbit has already surpassed Spirit's numbers on Wednesday by around 8%. If sales increase on pace with the past two days, it could be on track for a mid teens opening.

Summer also inflates preview as % of OD since it’s not a schoolday Th. Totally agree with 35-40%

Funny enough I looked my sheet of MCU previews and OD, Widow was already 35%. In present situation let's go 37.5%.

In my head I had AM2 at 38 ish but it was around 34, CM following it with 33.5%, so 37.5% is very likely with two years of fanbase ageing.

BEFORE EVERYBODY FREAKS OUT, remember that I'm only tracking the Thursday opening number. You know, the date that was announced at the last minute, therefore has very few sales. I'm not tracking the Friday number, if only because I've already got my hands full. Though at a cursory glance, it's selling a ton better on Friday. And just reading other people's reports here, Friday is what truly matters. But this is the opening day, so I feel I have to track it here. It's times like these previews were regularly reported, since these would make a better comparison.

Anyways, take my numbers as very grain of salty.

So this is also not a super fair comp either, because only like half of my tracked theaters have showtimes for Peter Rabbit up. For some reason, not a single AMC has showtimes posted. Weird.

Very strong day of sales locally.

Fairly top heavy day, however, as sales are still being grouped in the more desirable showtimes/larger auditoriums.  Isn't quite breaking out to the later showtimes or less desirable theaters.  Was also kinda concentrated in a few blasts of double digit sales (or high single digits) at premium locations.

So kinda think this might have been a blip.  Can't tell at a quick glance if there was a new TV Spot or trailer released today.  Do know about the Cannes news and it also looks like there was a promotion with an NBA playoff game tonight.  So maybe all of that contributed to a bump.  Or it was just one of those things.  See what tomorrow brings soon enuf.

Came a bit back down to earth today, as expected.  Think I'll start roping in a AQP II comp tomorrow, though it'll be pretty lol-tastic.

If I'm feeling froggy, I'll also throw in a KotM comp, with a lot of adjusting.  GvK, if I ever do it, will wait a bit, as we'd only be on Day Three of sales locally for GvK if I did a comp tomorrow.  H&S will probs wait till T-6 or so, if ever, as there is little reason to comp it right now given the huge disparity in sales patterns

Finding a minute to post something surprising to me this weekend about my theaters...apparently, they are still more optimistic about past movies than this weekend's movies...ESPECIALLY for Peter Rabbit.  Maybe the studio negotiated badly, maybe the opens of family movies have been discouraging, but BOTH of my 12s only have Peter Rabbit on ONE screen for the weekend (even Saturday/Sunday).  So, its sales can't be anything but soft, b/c at 1 screen per theater (although at least the biggest size at both), it's only got so much box office to make...

Anyway, not time to post everything, but

Local Cinemark 1

In The Heights - 2.5 screens (biggest size and medium sizes) 10 showings - 4 premium and 6 regular

Peter Rabbit - 1 screen (biggest size) 5 showings

Local Cinemark 2

In The Heights) - 2 screens (biggest size and medium size) - 7 showings

Peter Rabbit - 1 screen (biggest size) - 5 showings

One theater still has the Quiet Place 2 on 3 screens and the other has Conjuring on 2.5 screens - so, neither new movie got the most showings at either theater (although the horror movies get the 2nd biggest size theaters, so they probably equalize on seats with In The Heights)...

Although I guess I should go back to tracking my Regal, too - unlike Cinemark, my 2 local Regals (1 I tracked, 1 I didn't) have gone much more in on Peter Rabbit, but they are now advertising a sale where you "buy a ticket for Saturday, get a free small popcorn" - so they booked PR2 on 2 and 3 screens., and aren't selling them yet...so it's free popcorn time:)...

I skim through Regal showtime, and I realise the cinema in CA and new york closed very early, their last conjuring 3 and AQP2 is before 9pm. Why do they close this early? My local theater have last show slightly pass 11pm even during weekdays.

The reviews for The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard are looking to be really terrible starting with a 32 on Metacritic. Definitely feels like it's destined to fall victim to the "comedy sequel no one wanted" syndrome unless being the only movie timed for Father's Day allows it to save face a little.

ITH's Thursday and Friday have surpassed The Conjuring 2. I don't have a precise comparison, but I *think* it's doing closer to AQP2 than Cruella was at this point in time.

For the record, I also tracked Friday's numbers. Thu+Fri combines to 977 tickets sold. That is about 1.634x of Raya's Thu+Fri (4.25M) and 0.767x of Cruella's Thu+Fri (5.91M)

And umm...yeah, these aren't very good for two days. Kind of surprised honestly, since the Greater Philly Area should lean towards a Latino-led film IMO. I really hope this isn't a bad omen of things to come, because I know there will be tons of meltdowns in the weekend thread.

Thanks for the info as usual. I'm hopeful all other areas are doing much better and that it has major walk-ups. Also, its WOM needs to be excellent too.

Hey, it’s been a long time since we had a real juicy meltdown weekend thread. PR2+ITH 25M would be a fun way to get ‘er dun 👀

SELLOUT NOTE:  Locally, AQP II was still under a capacity cap, which greatly inflated the number of sellouts as well as depressing the amount of seats available.

ADJUSTMENT NOTE #1:  The comp for KotM has been adjusted downward by 10% to reflect theaters closures in much of Canada.

ADJUSTMENT NOTE #2:  F9 (AQP adj) is the amount of seats sold if I did not track D-BOX seating in the region, which I started to do with this track.

ADJUSTMENT NOTE #3:  F9 (KotM adj) is the ticket data at the same theaters I had tracking info for King of the Monsters.
