Getting more familiar with the excel and the transferring of information now, seems to be going smoother

I was feeling so good I was going to try Jungle Cruise, even shows "Advance tickets" on Cineplex, but none in Toronto area yet.

I was just doing some thinking and I might be underestimating how much Ontario is gonna matter (it has to do with theater/screen closures in the US affecting the percentage of the DOM market that Ontario makes up).  But before I really commit to this, I'd like to ask @Tinalera @cax16 and @Jason if they know if there's been any theater closures in Ontario.  Minor chains that might not have survived.  Cineplex not reopening all of its locations.  That sort of thing.

Actually matters a teeny bit around the edges and it might make me want to bump up my comp from dividing by 0.96 to dividing by 0.952.

Not the hugest difference in the world, but something I'm a little bit interested in if anyone knows the answer.

EDIT:::

The reason it might matter is this.  If Ontario made up 4 - 4.5 percent of the 2019 (and before) DOM market and if the DOM everywhere outside of Ontario has shrunk thanks to theater closures (and we know it has thanks to reports of folks losing their locals + screen loss information from Deadline + anecdotal tracking info comparing our tracks from 2019 to 2021) then Ontario will make up a slightly larger section of the 2021 DOM market.  The analogy is taking the same amount of stuff out of a larger pie versus a smaller one.  The percentage is gonna change when taken out of a smaller pie.

Not a huge amount, no.  But enough that I'm actually slightly curious.  Mind, if there has been theater closures in Ontario, then I ain't gonna bother.  Might not even bother if there aren't, frankly.  But might persuade me to use the higher end of Jat's estimate about how much Ontario matters rather than the lower one.

This has already been weighed in on (oops), but I looked into this a while back and it seems like even the minor chains/independent cinemas survived.  The landlord of one of my local independent theatres changed ownership (or something like that) but apparently many of the independent theatres in Toronto (including that one) have heritage protection. (So it's difficult to change the building to a different use.)

Since Keyser is taking a break I will post some MTC2 numbers. There was an issue with calculating the daily pace for BW but I think the overall number shouldn't be that off so it should give a decent indicator.

The Suicide Squad

Thursday

Showtimes: 1385

Seats Sold: 3729/221483

~0.136x Black Widow's Day 6 total (1.79 million)

Friday:

Showtimes: 3215

Seats Sold: 2720/526594

~0.182x Black Widow's Day 6 total (4.79 million)

The Black Widow number is extrapolated, I took Day 5 and Day 7 but not Day 6, but it won't be far off the real number. Either way the numbers are extremely low. Obviously Black Widow is not the best comp but even the Th/Fri ratio looks decently frontloaded (not as much as BW but definitely more so than F9).

How is it not the best comp? It's probably the most similar of anything released this year. Both big superhero films, both are day and date releases, summer movies, etc.

Yeah but BW was so much higher in presales that it's difficult to compare. I also thought before presales for TSS started that it would be a good comp but TSS numbers are just too low.

First Marvel film in forever, while DC had a film just before the pandemic and during the height of it.

To add to that, Marvel films have been undergoing something of a Star Wars-ification when it comes to pre-sale patterns,  I say "something of" because they aren't at the level of pre-sales heaviness that a typical SW film is, at least IMO, but I think they're more pre-sales heavy than most DC films outside of the biggest of names on the DC side.

Mind, it looks like there was a fan rush for TSS, just not a very large one.

Not that I'm making excuses for TSS, as it is underperforming by most metrics.  Just that if one uses Black Widow of a comp, I think it won't be all that accurate given that whenever TSS sees a sales bump it should disproportionately gain on a BW comp simply because it's so low already.

My Cinemark upgraded Old to XD. Starts 7pm on Thursday

My Cinemarks are also going with the "hope for the openers" strategy...right now, one is preselling both Old and Snake Eyes on 2 screens each, and they have the biggest screens in the theater (and each get 1 premium and 1 regular screen).  The other only has it on one each, but they take the 2 largest screens.

I guess there's not much to lose b/c Space Jam 2 never got a ton of space - Black Widow kept most of it and didn't use it...so taking it for the new openers is a "can't lose" strategy...of course, theaters still might not "win", but there's always "hope":)...

This seems like the week, "hope for $20M" should have actually been used for the openers...it's gonna take some hope:)...

Looking at Suicide Squad:

CINEMARK THURSDAY (21 total tickets)

7pm XD 14 tickets. 1015 XD 2 tickets

730 5 tickets. 1045. 0 tickets

CINEMARK FRIDAY (8 total tickets)

1220 XD 2 tickets. 340 XD 2 tickets. 7 XD 4 tickets. 1020 XD 0 tickets.
2pm 0 tickets. 520 0 tickets. 840 0 tickets.

AMC THURSDAY (58 total tickets)

7pm DOLBY 34 tickets.

8pm IMAX 22 tickets

730 digital 2 tickets

AMC FRIDAY (35 tickets)

330 DOLBY 3 tickets. 7pm DOLBY 14 tickets

430 IMAX 2 tickets. 8 IMAX 8 tickets.
4pm 0 tickets. 730 0 tickets

Way better than Jungle Cruise, at least. Birds of Prey did 33m OW, I’d say… 35m should really be the floor but unless sales truly pick up we might be looking at sub 40.. definitely under 50m

I knew things would be hard cause of the first suicide squad but I didn’t expect these numbers. At this point I’m just hoping for a good movie to help repair the brand and maybe with good wom the opening weekend can be decent. I don’t even know what number that is now but I’ll just hope for the best lol.

Is a 5 year old movie really to blame though? Aquaman did just fine coming off JL only a year later

Imo Yes, it has the same name basically with some carry over cast members.

If the movie is good it will set itself apart but it’s hard to blame people who see the title and don’t want to give this a chance right away.

Well 5 year is a very long gap, to a not so known group with just one movie.

The movie also being terrible is just a bonus.

IMAX AT LOCAL AMC (1 show on Thursday, 2 on Friday for all films):

  • Snake Eyes - 47 on Thursday, 4 on Friday
  • Jungle Cruise - 2 on Thursday, 0 on Friday
  • The Suicide Squad - 22 on Thursday, 10 on Friday

DOLBY AT LOCAL AMC (1 show on Thursday, 2 on Friday for all films):

  • Old - 23 on Thursday, 17 on Friday
  • Jungle Cruise - 20 on Thursday, 11 on Friday
  • The Suicide Squad - 34 on Thursday, 17 on Friday

Okay soooo one theater straight up isn't reporting available tix for snake eyes yet, so take those numbers with a grain of salt. Old seems to be doing decenetly compared to past horror films, so will have to keep an eye out. Snake Eyes should have a bit more prowess once the other theater gets added. Snake Eyes sold well on the IMAX screen locally so keep an eye out.

And yet...we have the other two films. Jungle Cruise has actually sold one more ticket than Suicide Squad so far at the two cinemarks, but I'll include the local IMAX/DOLBY screens at the biggest AMC in the area to give another opinion.
