The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Recommended Posts

Malignant is doing much better than Reminiscence at the theater I track (not hard to do), but without pulling up full comps it's probably at 20% of Conjuring 3 at the same point in time. I've been going with a sub-10M OW for a while anyways. I'll pull up full tracking (with Card Counter) tomorrow.

Shang Chi Monday

MTC1  - 346635/974575 4305023.03 5531 shows

MTC2 -  287913/880293 2909798.72 6079 shows

It dropped tad under 16% at MTC1 and about 15.5% at MTC2 from its saturday finish(I dont have its sunday number. There is also canada where the drop should be bigger. I would expect overall drop to be closer to 20%.

Its holiday in Canada too. Canada generally holds better than USA in every regards, and with spillover affect may be even more.

hah ok. For some reason I thought Canada celebrates labor day in May. Otherwise drop would be around 15%.

About flat PSm, quite reasonable given the bonkers PS. Suppose ~22.7*.86 for 19.5 until we hear from EC

Edit: my bad, this is from Sat not Sun. 23.2*.87 maybe right around 20?

Shang Chi Tuesday

MTC1 - 42735/625322 629919.07 3448 shows

MTC2 - 32292/637156 225779.80 4610 shows

Obviously its a weekday in September and I am not sure discount tuesday is anything like pre-covid. Still looks good to me.

@keysersoze123 why is 1 ATP still high as normal days? They don't do discounts or sales are very big city loaded for them.

You have to have a membership at MTC1 for discount Tuesday. Doesn’t have to be a paid one, but lots of people probably don’t care to do it.

Haven't seen one bit of marketing for Malignant - no trailer and only one TV spot ever. I mostly know it because @ViewerAnon's tweets. Not sure this was a hit in any climate but they're def burying it.

HEY WB...

I’m expecting The Night House numbers for Malignant, around $2.5-3m.

Malignant doesn’t even have social media adverts running here in the UK. I’ve only seen the occasional tweet from WB, but nothing promoted.

It feels like WB buries every film nowadays with their tepid and underwhelming marketing campaigns.

Not really planning on tracking these other than today and maybe Thursday or Friday, but here's where we stand for this weekend. SMtF is surprisingly low - expected to see some group sales already out there.  Card Counter shouldn't make too much noise in only 500 theaters and Queenpins is a Cinemark exclusive.  I guess Malignant is the only one that would be worth even looking at.

Malignant comps

Reminiscence - 2.11x (1.43m)

Forever Purge - 1.2x (1.6m)

Green Knight - .9x (672k)

Average - 1.23m for Friday.  Pretty easy second weekend for Shang-Chi if you ask me.

It's usually pretty obvious when WB is dumping a movie they have little faith in vs. actually putting all of their effort into one (even if it doesn't pay off in the end from time to time) more than any other studio.

In the second half of 2019 they released around a half-dozen movies with little promo and without Thursday previews and all of them ended up being puny grossers.
