The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Why do you say that?

No time to die tickets haven't even gone on sale yet in the US, and it seems to be selling well thus far in the UK.

And again, I do believe Venom 2 will pick up in the last week, but I digress about that. It seems like that fan screening is really out drum up buzz

Not just UK. Even Germany PS is off the roof according to Mark@InsideKino. We will see Europe having its 1st blockbuster post COVID. Neither BW nor Shang Chi created more than a ripple in Europe.

But marvel typically don't do super gangbuster business in Euro, so not really a great comparison.

Venom I still think will do 50/135 numbers, but that’s honestly not far off where I had it pre-pandemic.

I have NTTD at Spectre numbers. Pre-pandemic I would have had it a little higher (maybe 90/250) but it’s not a bad drop.

Dune is doing BR2049 numbers, but it was always going to.

Halloween is going to flop (25/60), streaming is going to kill it.

I really doubt either Venom 2 or Dune are doing their pre-pandemic numbers (their pre-pandemic numbers would've been higher). I don't know why people keep saying Dune would've done BR2049 numbers when the movie clearly has more hype (now proven by European sales) than that movie did.

And I doubt a service barely anyone uses will kill Halloween Kills. It's gonna be more like 40/90, which isn't great but probably enough to make a profit.

UK presales for Bond will be way higher than US presales. It's a way bigger franchise there.

Grand Rapids (AMC Grand Rapids 18): 0 (3 showtimes)

Comps: Angel has Fallen had on Wednesday for Friday 293 sold tickets in 7 theaters

and 21 Bridges had also on Wednesday for Friday in 7 theaters 277 sold tickets.
Maybe people see that they don't have to book tickets or it's indeed a walk-up film but its pre-sales just stayed unbelievable bad.

Cry Macho counted today at 11am EST for Friday:

NY (AMC Fresh Meadows 7): 15 (4 showtimes)
Miami (AMC Sunset Place 24):
4 (3 showtimes)
Grand Rapids (AMC Grand Rapids 18): 4 (3 showtimes)
Austin (AMC Lakeline 9): 0 (2 showtimes)
Tempe/Phoenix (AMC Centerpoint 11): 2 (5 showtimes)
San Francisco (AMC Metreon 16): 8 (3 showtimes)
LA (AMC Universal): 10 (3 showtimes)

Total tickets sold in 7 theaters: 43.

Comps (all counted on Wednesday for Friday): Those Who Wish Me Dead (2.8M OW) had 81 sold tickets in 4 theaters (so vs 35 sold tickets for Cry Macho),
The Good Liar (5.6M) had 70 sold tickets in 6 theaters,
Stillwater (5.2M) had 41 sold tickets in 6 theaters

Reminiscence had 225 sold tickets in 7 theaters
and Richard Jewell (4.7M) had 149 sold tickets in 5 theaters.
At least a bit better from the comps today. I really wonder what numbers this film would have had without the day and date release.

Of course. Lack of movies that really excites Europe was missing. My concern all along was if Europe is ready for a blockbuster. Hopefully the signs shown by Dune and Bond means we will have one soon with Bond.

Somehow feels like that everything till Eternals will end up cancelling the positivity that Free Guy and Shang Chi bring.

Who cares. Beating BB4L in peak delta is proof of theatrical viability. Everything after that is product issues.

Shang-Chi: 17M (-50%)

Cry Macho: 5-7M

Copshop: 5M

That's awful for Cry Macho. Budget was only 33m so it would have been a nice sized double in a COVID-less/HBO-MAX-less world.

Richard Jewell is one of his lowest opening films with 4.7m... I think this might sink below it?

I'm expecting it to. Richard Jewell actually had decent promotion and trailer placement compared to Cry Macho. WB only cares about Newark and Dune rn.

Shang-Chi dropping like that is kind of surprising since it's 2nd weekend drop was only what 53%~ despite the first weekend having Thurs previews and Monday being a holiday seems rather odd.

Weekdays so far support it unless it increases 160%+ Friday and/or 65%+ Saturday.

Theaters are probably going to wait until the last minute to determine Shang-Chi or DEH in PLFs next week if SC drops 45-50% this weekend. I wouldn't be surprised if they end up splitting screen space assuming DEH can break 10M in tracking.

DEH is another 5M opener. Just stick with Shang-Chi.

ITH had one of the largest PLF shares of any movie this year. Don't underestimate theater kids to spend as much as they can :hahaha:

That at least felt like a big screen experience. All I have seen from DEH were some dumb stills of Ben Platt looking like the least believable teenager ever.

Yeah that's a good sign for NWH as it will be releasing during Xmas. Won't be surprised with it doing +50-60% FFH in Europe.
