The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

As I kept saying for a while dont compare MCU movies with everything. I see same issue for Bond. Comparing it to SC or BW is ridiculous. Real action will happen only in the final week and its Previews to OW multi will be better than SH movies. I am expecting both Venom 2 and Bond to have strong OW.

I don't any one was seriously using the SC direct comp. If they were, well...

SC comp initially was at $3-4M, but was evident that V2 will hit $6-7M but guess the first few days were weak due release date ambiguity. V2 isn't still the F9 type where final day action is what matters, V2 still got that CBM pre-sales loaded ness.

Yeah it's pretty quiet and poor so far, but this isn't really a ticket seller kind of film. We'll see what happens as time goes on.

So I'll admit that it could be overperforming here. This feels like more of a coastal film, and Philly's nearby Jersey, so it could mess up the regional issues even more. But hey, nothing wrong with having hope I suppose.

If Venom 2 became a breakout, then TSS is really a bomb in every way since both coming off from the critically panned predecessor.

It was always a sorry excuse. Especially after WW and Aquaman broke out following BvS and JL

ADJUSTMENT NOTE: NTTD (AQP adj) is the amount of seats sold that does not include DBOX showings which were not tracked at that time while NTTD (F9 adj) is the amount of seats sold that does not include theaters which had unreliable data polluting their seat maps.

SELLOUT NOTE:  Locally, AQP II was still under a capacity cap, which greatly inflated the number of sellouts as well as depressing the amount of seats available.

Added a "Matinee" field on both this and NTTD, as we're getting to the point in Venom 2 sales where it is actually starting to matter.  Not all that many tickets at the moment as Cinemark isn't offering matinee pricing here for Thur Night, and that matters a lot given how much of the market share it has here.

Regal, which is offering some matinee showings, also doesn't appear to be offering it on its PLF screens, and that also matters with V2's current PLF penetration (currently 40% of all seats sold are some sort of PLF — which will start to come down as we get closer to release).

Not much else to say, except another absolutely gangbusters day locally which shows that Sunday was no fluke at all.

I’m going to be a bit careful using my region to track NTTD, as it already looks like it’s overperforming here significantly.

For example, in Canada, BC is behind Ontario regions in terms of presales for Venom, which makes sense (Ontario is a much bigger market). Ontario south and north are the strongest regions, followed by BC. But for NTTD, BC is far and away ahead of both Ontario regions.

I saw this with Shang Chi last month, which did our equivalent of ~120M 4-day opening at my theater. So when I track NTTD local sales, I’ll make sure to account for regional overperformance, and try to paint a less biased picture.

Bottom line so far is that both Venom and NTTD are looking strong. Venom is currently ahead, but that’s of course because it releases a week sooner. I guess we’ll see how things shake out.

There are way too many shows added for Venom 2 in Harkins, most of them will hardly be selling anything. Such a overkill. Not tracking it.

Gonna get every last dime into OW...I assume a LOT of holdovers took screen/showing hits, b/c there are two other openers, too (or they just got scraps)...

I mean, sure, it's been something I've been noting all week.  But Venom 2 locally doing 73% more than Shang-Chi did on it's Sunday of release week made me want to pull a Cyber Ninja on my own data just because of it being that backloaded.

It's not even an F9 performer. This backloadedness is another level. Though I had sort of suspected that, since even Shang-Chi was not that much less backloaded than F9.
