The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Recommended Posts

Dune has sold 0... ZERO tickets at Cinemark here on Friday across 4 showings (2 XD). No Thursdays.

AMC (Thursday) (406)

6pm IMAX (SOLD OUT) Probably 300 seats?

6pm DOLBY (91)

8pm 3D (11)

730 (4)

Friday (149)

445 DOLBY (10), 830 DOLBY (42)

415 IMAX: (19), 8pm IMAX (74)

315 IMAX (0), 715 3D (4)

730 (0)

Besides Cinemark, these AMC numbers are astonishing.  Higher than shang-Chi first day from what I remember. 50+ can happen

CNBC: ‘No Time to Die’ eyes $100 million domestic box office opening

https://www.cnbc.com/2021/10/04/no-time-to-die-eyes-100-million-domestic-box-office-opening.html

100m is also what I have in my mind after Venom 2 surprise but looking at NTTD's overseas gross, the opening are still on par with Skyfall. This suggest 80-90m opening in USA since Skyfall did a similar number in 2012. A 100m opening would need some serious US-friendly factor, or artificially by high preview number since Skyfall only had 2.2m in preview for its 90.6m opening.

Universal doesn't have anything to do with NTTD's domestic release, do they? Their logo certainly isn't in front of the film in the US.

Nope, it’s all MGM domestically.

I liked how they did the Universal logo on NTTD though, shame the US will miss out on that little touch.

I think a lot something a lot of people are under-estimating is that Dune is gonna have a lot more appeal to female movie-goers than a lot of other big movies this fall, just based on Chalamet alone. So many girls I've talked to have said they're gonna watch this for him lol

I haven't looked at the tracking thread for NTTD info in the last few days, but saw that article from CNBC and others saying a $100m opening is likely and did a double take.

Am I missing something or is the media just doing a stupid extrapolation from this past weekend?

I don't see it at 100. I think it's an overreaction to Venom. Today's data will give a better idea of the final week ramp up to see if it can have a crazy breakout.

makes sense cinemark would be weak here given geographic focus and the fact they don't have IMAX. this movie is for IMAX - AMC and Regal will way outperform

Eh, Cinemark has XD which is just as good as FauxIMAX IMO.  Or at least close enough not to make a terrible difference.

Stupidity. Please put the expectations of BOT back in a realistic place. Thanks.
