The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Recommended Posts

I ran out of likes very early today but will continue as soon as possible/in a few hours.
And this time it was really laborious to find some old comparison numbers.

NTTD counted today at 10am EST for today:

NY (AMC Fresh Meadows 7): 112 (1 showtime)
Miami (AMC Sunset Place 24):
197 (1 showtimes)
Grand Rapids (AMC Grand Rapids 18): no showtimes
Austin (AMC Lakeline 9): no showtimes
Tempe/Phoenix (AMC Centerpoint 11): no showtimes
San Francisco (AMC Metreon 16): 329 (1 showtime)
LA (AMC Universal): 288 (1 showtime)

Total tickets sold in 4 theaters: 929.

NTTD counted today at 10am EST for tomorrow, October 7:

NY (AMC Fresh Meadows 7):
229 (7 showtimes)
Miami (AMC Sunset Place 24):
287 (12 showtimes)
Grand Rapids (AMC Grand Rapids 18): 53 (7 showtimes)
Austin (AMC Lakeline 9): 27 (2 showtimes)
Tempe/Phoenix (AMC Centerpoint 11): 70 (2 showtimes)
San Francisco (AMC Metreon 16): 698 (8 showtimes)
LA (AMC Universal): 632 (15 showtimes)

Total tickets sold in 7 theaters: 1.987.
Wed + Thu = 2.913.
Comps: Hobbs & Shaw (5.8M from previews) had on Wednesday of its release week 1.591 sold tickets in the same 7 theaters. Means even without the AE tickets NTTD would in comparison be at ca. 7.25M from previews and 10.6M when Wednesday is added which is the likelier variant.
Ford vs Ferrari (31.5M OW) had on the same day 649 sold tickets.

NTTD counted today at 11am EST for Friday, October 8:

NY (AMC Fresh Meadows 7):
364 (9 showtimes)
Miami (AMC Sunset Place 24):
307 (14 showtimes)
Grand Rapids (AMC Grand Rapids 18): 84 (13 showtimes)
Austin (AMC Lakeline 9): 62 (4 showtimes)
Tempe/Phoenix (AMC Centerpoint 11): 93 (15 showtimes)
San Francisco (AMC Metreon 16): 771 (14 showtimes)
LA (AMC Universal): 702 (14 showtimes)

Total tickets sold in 7 theaters: 2.383.
Had a very decent jump of 43% since Monday.
Comps: F9 had on Wednesday of its release week 2.812 sold tickets (this movie had an even better jump of 70% in two days but my AMC in NY clearly is a pure action film-affine theater; in this theater the F9 sales doubled those of Bond so they're probably rather on par overall).
H&S had 1.941 sold tickets on the same day = x1.23 = 21.9M true Friday
and Ford vs Ferrari (8.9M true Friday) had 914 sold tickets in the same 7 theaters (on the one hand this was an original film, OTOH Bond IMO has a way broader appeal so here it's probably not the worst comp) = 23.2M true Friday.

At the moment I would say NTTD will have an OW of 80M+.

Monday (10/11) is Columbus Day in the States. Maybe Sunday will have a smaller drop off from Saturday since people have the following day off.

Monday is also Canadian Thanksgiving, a Canada-wide holiday.

So that could have a slight impact on Sunday's hold as well...

It will be interesting if the TMobile deal just pulled people from other chains to Atom ones since your theater had a poor day, but the AMC in NY had an amazing one...

Obviously wanna wait for the national data to get the best picture, but it seems like the growth yesterday was helped by t-mobile deal and today may have trouble keeping pace. The Wed early access kinda screws with the comps either way though.

My local Cineplex here in Ottawa, Canada has Bond showing on IMAX tonight, so yes, at least some of Canada has these early shows as well.

Toronto has at least 4 showings tonight at various theatres

Update with final Early Access sale:

No Time to Die:

Weds Early Access IMAX: 74/372 (+26)

4:00 IMAX: 12/372 (+3)

5:00 Dolby: 35/236 (-)

7:00: 13/107 (+3)

8:00 IMAX: 19/372 (-)

9:00 Dolby: 53/236 (+6)

Total: 206/1,695 (+38) (138/1,323 without Early Access)

Comps:

56% of Shang-Chi the day before (4.9M)

59% of Venom 2 the day of (6.7M)

60% of Black Widow the day before (7.9M)

75% of F9 the day of (5.3M)

99% of AQP2 the day of (4.8M)

141% of The Suicide Squad the day of (5.8M)

278% of Old the day of (4.2M)

412% of Snake Eyes the day of (5.8M)

This was a weak day for sales. It's caught up to Black Widow well, but it's losing strong leads against pretty much everything else. Hopefully walkups rebound tomorrow.

Unsurprisingly, it's very frontloaded. But Thursday and Friday are putting up fantastic numbers

007: NO TIME TO DIE
Date Showings Sold Capaity % Sold
10/7/2021 18 480 1,860 25.81%
10/8/2021 28 826 3,078 26.84%

Numbers overall are....2.5% ahead of where Venom was here. After Many Saints of Newark freakishly overindexed here last weekend, I think it's definitely a market that favors more adult oriented films. Interesting that it sold as many as venom with a bit over half the showtimes and 60% of the capacity, there's a much bigger slide towards Friday too.

I’m afraid the 100m talk will lead to disappointment. Shame because every theatrical release overperformed. The Wrap just posted a 100m article

I have seen no evidence of this

I think the lack of shows due to the length of the film will be a pretty big factor in the opening weekend. I could see a few of the oldies deciding against a crowded theater and opting to go midweek or the 2nd week. The legs should be good. Maybe get it to 250M in total and something just shy of an 80M opening would be my guess.
