The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

This is why the BW comps will go up...

Just like we saw with SC. More established will be more front loaded, as a general rule, first intro of new characters less, right? I feel like this dynamic is very well established.

But there will be less interest in many as well as opposed to seeing BW for one last time. It wont play that wide for sure. That shows in MTC2 ratio being well down. We will know in few days if that is true or not.

That said the MCU fanbase is big and they did buy yesterday in full. I am looking at GA at this point.

Dang, potentially some crazy good numbers for Halloween.

The genre can make it seen for many has a near irrelevant home watch too, would be curious to see the rating of people that have seen a movie like It first weekend in a filled crowd versus at home.

I'm guessing there is some pent-up demand for a proper horror experience in October. Definitely expecting it to play better with an audience.

Out of curiosity, just did a quick run in Sacto for Halloween Kills, and I got something in the 3m range off a AQP II comp (used T-3 numbers for AQP II since it's in the afternoon here in Sacramento), so much like Denver it doesn't appear to be taking off here quite yet.

Horror is extremely walkup based, but so was AQP II.  If I have the time/inclination tonight I might do a more rigorous check so I can also compare it to F9.

Had some time to kill since my Gigantes were shitting the bed tonight, so I just did a Quick and Dirty check of Halloween Kills locally.

...

Could be better. Could be a lot better

1042/10125 tickets sold.

Have to do various adjusting, but for AQP II that gives a current comp of 2.68m and for F9 that gives 2.77m.

(Came down from 3m-ish coz I was using T-3 comps while doing a sample at 4pm)

Maybe Sacto is hella underperforming. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

FWIW, TSS gives a comp of 4m while V2 gives a comp of 3.2m.  And TSS hella underperformed locally.

(as might be expected, this doing quite well post 10pm so something to keep in mind)

Edit: MTC1 previews look a bit weaker. I guess be a bit cautious on MTC2 here, it may be overindexing on previews. Still Friday seems extremely strong for both even accounting for the MTC2 overindex.

FWIW, there are a lot more showtimes here for MTC2 than MTC3 or the indies.  Like, by a lot.

MTC2:             62 showings

Everyone else: 27 showings

That's a big skew for us, even when considering this is a MTC2 heavy market.

I'd expect MTC3 to ratchet up the showtimes in the last two days as they're seeing brisk sales at their good locations.  But even so, that might be skewing your numbers a bit if this is playing out nationwide (MTC2 expanded before other outfits).

Also, I know that MTC2 has XD showings and while MTC3 has some RPXs, I haven't seen any IMAX screenings, so that'll also tilt the balance in favor of MTC2 where they directly compete with each other.

Very nice first day.  Decided that Venom: Let There Be Carnage and F9 were dumb comps for now.  I'll rope in V2 eventually and F9 (and maybe others) closer to the end.

Not much else to say that hasn't been said by others.

I don't have BW comp but first 4 days of sales was ~1700 admits. Not entirely sure if Eternals can reach there in 4 days, so let's see. I guess West coast is bit lower than Black Widow while East is over for Eternals.

That Shang Chi comp shall drop in coming days (right :hahaha:)

SC had social media reactions on the night of its day 1, hence it held well for the first 4-5 days before dropping off. Then it had another review bump the next Monday too. I think BW will be a better comp until the final week since they were closer in PS length.

After seeing some of the other Candyman comps for Halloween I started to question what I was getting; sure enough, I hadn't updated the preview number when I updated from Venom comps.  While it lowers the comp to a much more realistic number, it's still higher than the other comps.  For showtimes, The Last Duel only added two while Halloween Kills added 26 (though none in Raleigh yet for some reason).  Hoping we get a few more today - that 13.17% sold really stands out with still two days left.

Halloween Kills

Toronto Ontario

Taken Oct 13 for Thurs Oct 14

8 Theatres, 21 showings

Total Sold 489

Total Available 5007

Percentage sold 8.9

Good news (possibly). It sounds like starting Friday theatres will be allowed full capacity here in Ontario, meaning no more "Seat Counts by percentage" It will be nice not only for posting, but I can have a definitive number now of what theatres have what seat counts when doing future numbers. Yay I guess?
