The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Cinemark is getting into these "there is no hype" free loyalty screening for kid movies...

I saw Ron, and it was great...and maybe upped OW by $1-2M...

Now, I'm seeing Clifford on Oct 30 at 4pm...we'll see if this earlier showing is enough to get non-existent WOM going...at least I'll be able to compare to Ron:)...

Antlers, counted today at 10am EST for Friday October 29:

NY (AMC Fresh Meadows 7):
12 (5 showtimes)
Miami (AMC Sunset Place 24):
4 (6 showtimes)
Grand Rapids (AMC Grand Rapids 18):
0 (4 showtimes)
Austin (AMC Lakeline 9): 0 (1 showtime)
Tempe/Phoenix (AMC Centerpoint 11): 0 (2 showtimes)
San Francisco (AMC Metreon 16):
16 (4 showtimes)
LA (AMC Universal): 11 (3 showtimes)

Total tickets sold in 7 theaters: 43.

Gets enough screens (they obviously hope for an Halloween boost) but the sales are bad so far.
Comps (always counted on Monday for Friday): Old (16.9M OW) had 150 sold tickets in 7 theaters,
The Night House (
2.9M OW) had 24 in 5

and Malignant (5.4M OW) had 100 sold tickets in 6 theaters.

Last Night in Soho, counted today at 10am EST for Friday October 29:

NY (AMC Fresh Meadows 7):
no showtimes so far
Miami (AMC Sunset Place 24): 27 (5 showtimes)
Grand Rapids (AMC Grand Rapids 18):
0 (4 showtimes)
Austin (AMC Lakeline 9): 0 (1 showtime)
Tempe/Phoenix (AMC Centerpoint 11): 3 (2 showtimes)
San Francisco (AMC Metreon 16):
59 (8 showtimes)
LA (AMC Universal): 37 (3 showtimes)

Total tickets sold in 6 theaters: 126.

Comps (always counted on Monday for Friday): Reminiscence (2M OW) had 119 sold tickets in 7 theaters and 67 in the same 6 theaters
and Old (16.9M OW) again which had 150 sold tickets in 7 theaters and 108 in the same 6.
Reminiscence
massively overperformed in my theaters but so far it's not looking too bad for LNiS.

My Hero Academia, counted today at 10am EST for Friday October 29:

NY (AMC Fresh Meadows 7):
no showtimes so far
Miami (AMC Sunset Place 24): 145 (2 showtimes)
Grand Rapids (AMC Grand Rapids 18):
no showtimes
Austin (AMC Lakeline 9): no showtimes
Tempe/Phoenix (AMC Centerpoint 11): 20 (1 showtime)
San Francisco (AMC Metreon 16):
60 (4 showtimes)
LA (AMC Universal): 177 (3 showtimes)

Total tickets sold in 6 theaters: 402.

Comps (always counted on Monday for Friday): I wish I would have counted Demon Slayer but I didn't and so I have no good comps. Snake Eyes (13.4M OW) had 272 sold tickets in 7 theaters
and Paw Patrol (13.1M OW,
probably also no good comp, just mentioned for the number) had 140 in 6 theaters.
However, MHA
easily wins in my report too and that with a really good number.

The French Dispatch has so far only showtimes in one of my AMCs, that in LA. There it had today 24 (2 shows) and 12 (also 2 shows) sold tickets for Thursday respectively Friday.

Eternals MTC2

I took numbers yesterday but somehow, despite thinking I had posted them, I hadn't posted them. So the pace mentioned below is 24 hours (closer to 23).

Thursday

Showtimes: 1956

Seats Sold: 31334/318716 (+1466)

$ Sales: 445658 (+20200)

Friday

Showtimes: 3719

Seats Sold: 23014/622000 (+1231)

$ Sales: 309514 (+16739)

Review bump is nothing much so far. I guess people won't check into news as much on weekends though, so weird choice to drop embargo on a Sunday. Guess it couldn't be helped with the Rome festival but I don't think I've ever seen a weekend embargo drop before. Let's see if tomorrow is better, I'd have liked to see a bigger bump (also the review being mixed probably didn't help).

hoping today is better

We'll see, not sure about that.

i dont really know how the reviews bump works to be honest, even if the reactions were more positive , can we really say that it would have a better bump ? idk i dont think that bond got a bump, while venom got even though the reactions were average at best.Hopefully eternals does well for the rest of its run , so far is does great it would be shame if it didnt continue to do so, still the last week will be the key anyways i think

Venom's bumps in the week before release were weird, there was a strange bump on the Thursday before release that didn't seem to be prompted by anything at all, so no point in comparing.

As far as Eternals, my impression of the reason review bumps happen is (usually) because both reviews get people aware of the film and good reviews may drive people to buy a ticket. Eternals reviews, despite the RT score being okay for now, were not covered particularly positively in media headlines (MCU being a victim of its own past success there). And, being a hyped MCU movie, it already had fairly high awareness and a lot of fans had already bought tickets, so not much bump for that reason either.

indeed and the headlines didnt help either , if someone were to read the headlines only he would think that the score was 50 lol, i am not saying that reviews are GREAT mind you but not like the headlines are make out to be either.

The pace has slowed down a bit. Black Widow really started to pick up this week, so we'll see if Eternals can match that with the reviews we've seen thus far.

No real boost in pace here. Better than the pace over the previous 2 days, but before that it was increasing by 60-70 per day. So no change from that

If the adjusted BW comp merely remains steady at 11.3 for the next 5 days, we’ll be in good shape to break 100M.

BW reviews dropped the equivalent of tomorrow, though need to check exactly how big the boost was.

Yep, went 73 to 129 in Denver, so the comp is gonna take a hit tomorrow.

Yeah Denver and Megaplex had a really good boost and sustained that. I don’t see how Eternals will come close to the next 4-5 days of BW.

Eternals MTC2

Thursday

Showtimes: 1956

Seats Sold: 32857/318398 (+1523)

Total $ Sales: 466945 (+21387)

Friday

Showtimes: 3719

Seats Sold: 24609 (+1595)

Total $ Sales: 329597 (+20083)

Blech. And there's nothing soon that will cause any big bump in the sales. At this point the best it can hope for is gradual pickup throughout the week and hopefully doesn't get completely left in the dust by BW. Will start the BW comp tomorrow to see whether it starts to drop big time.

The last two days have been really shocking to me. It was going well and then completely stalled here. Will recalibrate my OW expectations lower, though not sure about exact numbers. It has some time left so hopefully things improve.

NYC Local (8pm)

Antlers    2/602
Last Night In Soho    7/496

Eternals:  169/1753  (52.66% PLF) (- 1 week)

COMPS:

SC: $19.07m
Joker:  $21.61m
Venom2: $29.26m
Bond: $38.42m

One could say it's doing quite well here    Even greatly outselling SC and Joker which were heavily preview pre-sale here.
