The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Recommended Posts

Eternals was never SUPER strong at my theater. But that might be because Dune and Bond have been sucking all the oxygen (Bond opened to our equivalent of ~115M locally, and Dune ~105M... insane).

Last Night in SoHo is selling decently, wouldn’t be surprised if it can pull 10M, but my area is usually strong for arthouse content, and A24 type stuff so it’ll play well here regardless I guess.

the competition got Dispatch and Antlers so I don’t have much way of tracking either of them this week unfortunately.

Dune was more due to IMAX than Canada I believe. I track one IMAX Harkins, that theater was bigger than Black Widow just on account of IMAX.

Nationwide Dune did $9M in IMAX during weekend, more than $8.6M Venom 2, $8M of Shang Chi & $7.2M of Black Widow.

The pace is barely 40% of Demon Slayer at same time, overall sales being 57% in MTC 2. Hopefully @keysersoze123 give us some numbers.

@katnisscinnaplex does those show counts include Canada?

For DS we just have D-5 vs D-3 right? But if next day is similar will be kind of weak pace yeah. DS final day and then same-day were hurt by occupancy though.

Dolby's carrying the bulk of this movie's sales, but...that's true with pretty much every movie, so at least it's easy to predict which of the two horror openers will do better this weekend.

I still have concerns over the next few days. Menor's sales weren't that pretty, and this could simply be one good day followed by a bad day or two. But this seems like a decent round of sales for the moment.

Muted review bounce here in Sacto.  Pretty uneven as well, as it was dominated by spurts at individual theaters as opposed to steady sales everywhere.

Weather is pretty nasty today though, so it's possible folks just weren't in the mood to buy tickets.  Either way next to no bounce here for now.

Blech. And there's nothing soon that will cause any big bump in the sales. At this point the best it can hope for is gradual pickup throughout the week and hopefully doesn't get completely left in the dust by BW. Will start the BW comp tomorrow to see whether it starts to drop big time.

The last two days have been really shocking to me. It was going well and then completely stalled here. Will recalibrate my OW expectations lower, though not sure about exact numbers. It has some time left so hopefully things improve.

I am not really sure but seeing todays twitters reactions, they may give the bump that reviews didntb, fingers crossed

I...guess, because looking at Eric's, Porthos, and my data from the morning run I'm taking, there was some weird inexplicable jump last night?

Though still not enough to keep pace with BW but at least better than what yesterday was doing.

if the the next reviews are also positive i could see a scenario where there are many small bumps instead of a big one

Soho comps

Old - .72x (1.08m)

Reminiscence - 1.95x (1.32m)

Antlers comps

Malignant - .513x (1.03m)

Don't Breathe 2 - 1.33 (1.29m)

I've got these pretty close at the moment.  Soho will get a boost from Wednesday shows while Antlers could get a Halloween boost.

My Hero Academia comps

....

Okay, I don't have anything for this in my limited data set.  Just looking at total sales for T-4, here are some close totals:

F9 - 1,241

No Time to Die - 993

MHA - 969

Halloween Kills - 717

Space Jam - 629

Dune was at 1,179 on T-3 (didn't get T-4) so it was likely close as well.

Eternals comps

BW - .714x (9.43m)

Shang-Chi - 1.94x (17.07m)

TSS - 5.517x (22.62m)

Okay, maybe it's still too early for the Shang-Chi comp? This would be seven days of sales so I thought it would have caught up a bit.   BW seems to be the only legit comp I have for this.  Venom comp would put it at 28.7m so I scrapped that immediately.

I.... I don't think reviews/impressions from a bunch of Twitter Randos moved the needle one iota.  I personally think it was just normal Marvel expansion at this stage of the game.

(Helped locally a bit from not being in the middle of a monsoon)

I would note that most of the BW comps barely budged from what I can tell.

the last week will be the most important.I wouldnt expect the bw comp to change much for now , it will still keep probably increasing a bit , but not much bc at that stage bw had some boost from the reviews. The real increase will probably come in the next week.

I don't think Twitter should have such effects either but there was some weird bump last night for sure. Yeah the BW comps didn't move much, but from the pace on Sunday they should have dropped a lot. I took a quick run this morning to confirm and the pace indeed sped up a lot compared to the previous night. Still, the comps will start dropping today given BW review drop.
