A Paramount family film and a Focus awards contender will serve as alternatives to the Marvel blockbuster

Instead of a new tentpole coming to theaters this weekend, the box office will see a family film (Paramount’s “Clifford the Big Red Dog”) and an awards contender (Focus Features’ “Belfast”) try to carve out a niche against the second weekend of Marvel Studios’ “Eternals.”

Neither of the newcomers are expected to challenge “Eternals” for the No. 1 spot, though it is still uncertain how much director Chloé Zhao’s superhero epic will earn this weekend given the film’s cooler-than-usual reception by critics and first-week audiences. The film, which has grossed $75 million through Monday, will need to gross above $28.5 million this weekend or risk dropping 60% from opening weekend grosses.

“Clifford,” meanwhile, is holding preview screenings all day Tuesday ahead of a nationwide opening on Wednesday in theaters and on Paramount+. According to the studio, the Wednesday release was seeking to take advantage of Veterans’ Day on Thursday with the hope of bringing in families with kids who have the day off from school. Box office trackers are projecting an extended opening of $17-20 million.

Only one movie this past weekend made more than $8M. Even with the improving market conditions, there's still a shortage of incoming product to clear out the stuff that's playing to mostly empty seats.

Yeah, I didn't mention they've also kept and booked a bunch of foreign films...Cinemark is trying to find product anywhere again...nothing but Ron got dropped (which is funny after it finally found a great hold, but that's what happens when a great hold doesn't get you more than $3.5M overall), and Eternals lost a screen at both theaters, so it's 2 and 2.5 now...

 

Anyway, we should see another good weekend for Venom, NTTD, and Dune, who all stayed as is for another week...

Still, the domestic box office looks to resuscitate itself again in late December with Sony/Marvel/Disney’s Spider-Man: No Way Home which many are already betting will be the domestic box office’s first $100M opening during the pandemic.

 

Focus Features begins the limited launch of its festival crowd pleaser Belfast directed by Kenneth Branagh at roughly 588 theaters on Friday. The black and white movie is based on the actor-filmmaker’s childhood during the late 1960s. Already the movie scored 11 British Independent Film Award nominations, the Oscar bellwether prize, TIFF’s People’s Choice Award; among several film festival awards. Last night, the pic had its Hollywood premiere at the Academy Museum. The hope here is at least $1M for the weekend, though black and white movies are always challenged at the box office.

Belfast is selling terribly around me and these are at prime arthouse-friendly theaters where Oscar movies tend to do really well in advance sales. Guess the pressure really is on for Gaga and Spielberg to provide that glimmer of hope for the adult-driven movie now.
