The number of reserved seats (and those I can check) has not only great increased from last year but just last month with GOTG2.

So I did the Philadelphia area for the weekend. I'm including theaters in Philadelphia, king of Prussia and towns in South Jersey that attract folks from the Philadelphia area for movie times. 

 

There are 332 regular 2D showtimes 

Zero sell outs 

 

211 3D showtimes 

zero sell outs 

 

55 IMAX 3D showtimes 

zero sell outs 

 

*Note I consider a sell out any showtime that all seats are taken but the front row. 

 

*Also to consider while there are no sell outs there are quite a few near sell outs for tonight and tomorrow night. Sunday and Saturday morning have more near sell outs than the evenings. 

 

If this is going to breakout, it's going to rely heavily on walk-ups in my opinion.

What is going on with Captain Underpants? Is this a dump by Fox with the movie being the last Dreamworks they distribute? There has never been a CGI movie by dreamworks opening ins such a low number of theaters.

I don't have exact comparisons because I didn't save the data so I'm going simply off of my memory but from what I remember SS had a ton of sell outs in the area at this point in time. GOTG2 was right behind SS if not having a similar amount of sell outs but GOTG2 definitely benefited by more walk ups than SS did or folks simply waited to buy their tickets the day of. 

 

Also in terms of showtimes WW definitely has less.

I wonder if because so many theatres are going with more reserved shows sell outs might be going down gradually now as people have more options. I'm not expecting WW to open close to guardians at all but I'm just curious if that's a trend we'll start seeing.

I don't think that's it because many of the the premium screens that would normally sell out anyway because of scarcity haven't - there isn't one IMAX sellout yet.  Tickets can still be bought early for non reserved shows so theaters also know when they're filing up and have to add more shows.   At this point WW has only 7 more showings than SS did Tues night, and 67 less than GOTG2 (20% less)  and 184 less than CW (40% less) on Thur.

I'm sure you're right as you've been following this a lot longer then I have. I'm curious how this weekend will play out, should be fun to follow.

Now that pretty much every theater in my area has reserved seating, movies very very rarely sellout anymore because once people see all but the front two rows taken, they don't buy. 

 

I mentioned in the weekend thread that Saturday and Sunday are continually performing above expectations, and I legit think this is at least part of the reason why.

With 31 Altogether showings across 6 Alamo Drafthouse Theaters in Austin (29 -2D & 2 -3D....THEY ARE ALMOST ALL FULL/SOLDOUT! In fact so far at this hour 7 out of 31 screenings are SOLD OUT!! Many more very close to be sold out! I'll keep y'all updated from Austin TX

No They are for everyone!! Those 2 only Women Showtimes aren't until tuesday which are sold out! But all other Showtimes everywhere and including Tuesday are for everyone
