The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Recommended Posts

Bohemian Rhapsody in Victoria:

IMAX - 72/431

Regular - 128/161

Combined = 182% of First Man's combined IMAX and Regular total (29.1M)

          - But I've mentioned a few times that First Man definitely overperformed in this market when comparing it to other movies. So I'd say this could suggest 35+ (so far).

Not including IMAX = 474% of El Royale (33.8M)

Dolby, XD, IMAX for Bohemian doing double regular showings, and regular showings 250/250 sold out showings looking to be 250/500 at the premiums too.

Nobody's Fool should not come close to Acrimony.   Acrimony averaged 64 purchases per location at approx. 1,700 locations at $9.14 average price for $1,000,000.

Nobody's Fool could come around 700k though, close to Goosebumps and House/Clock.  It seems to be doubling the reserved seating business that Hunter Killer and Hate U Give were making which brought in close to $350k.

Predator w/ 2.5 Thursday #, Pacific Rim w/ 2.35, Rampage - 2.4, Mamma Mia 2 - 3.4, The Meg - 4.0,

double these ^ gets close to Alien Covenant's 3.6, a decent prediction for BR Thursday #.

The Nutcracker:

Suspiria:

7:00: 23/40

10:30: 7/40

Total: 30/80

So I ran the numbers of these totals, and I got these results:

The Nutcracker, in this specific location, is on track to fill 22% of its total seats this weekend.

Meanwhile, Suspiria is on pace to fill 37.5% of its theaters in this location.

That's fascinating to me. I know that The Nutcracker will have many more theaters and it's no contest as to which film will gross more, but when you think about the potential PTA, if this is the type of turnout going on for a multitude of domestic locations, then Suspiria might have a better PTA than The Nutcracker. Personally, I would never have guessed.

Suspiria is being put in one of the smallest auditoriums at almost every theater it's opening at this weekend so I doubt it.

Bohemian Rhapsody:

IMAX - 100 tickets all night

Regular - 158 tickets all night

Combined Total: 192.5% First Man ($30.82M)

     - Again though, given First Man's generally strong performance here, I'd say this puts 35/37 on the table or something. Definitely thinking previews will be around 3 though given the crazy sales I saw when quickly checking other theatres.

When it comes to next weekend’s family audience and their appetite for holiday action, Illumination/Universal’s The Grinch is going to steal all the dollars with an estimated near $60M start.

North Shore Cinema update

——————————————————————

Dr. Seuss: The Grinch is running about 13.6% ahead of Coco ($56.8M) and the same as Hotel 3 ($44M).

Yeah, although these comps are about a day off, Grinch is looking at $45M-$55M OW imho although the fact that it’s so close to HT3 is a bit troubling.

1.1034x as many tickets sold as JW:FK 11 days before release (JW:FK had 22 days of pre-sales compared to FB2's 30 days of pre-sales)

$39M x 0.2251 = $8.79M

$25.2M x 0.5748 = $14.48M

$18.6M x 0.6311 = $11.74M

$14.1M x 0.5206 = $7.34M

$15.3M x 1.1034 = $16.88M

These five average to $11.85M, with Tuesday's screenings making 29.4% of that figure, or $3.48M (though I'd consider it part of the regular previews, as anyone who'll see it on Tuesday wouldv'e seen it on opening night regardless). For reference, the first one earned $8.75M in its previews.

4 days ago it looked like this:

Quote

$39M x 0.2057 = $8.02M

$25.2M x 0.6006 = $15.13M

$18.6M x 0.6644 = $12.36M

$14.1M x 0.4892 = $6.9M

$15.3M x 1.1460 = $17.53M

These five average to $11.99M, with Tuesday's screenings making 32.9% of that figure, or $3.94M.

So, we could see that the average has gown down a bit (though far less than I expected), while the range has shortened, and a much bigger proportion of the sales is going for Thursday instead of Tuesday.

I will probably do this again in a few days to how it trends, but for now I'll say that $10M+ previews is looking pretty good, at least for the moment.
