The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Wait, did the tracker not shift an hour for DST as well? I’d expect it to still be the same time relative to you, since it seems to run on US Central time.

Nope. It used to be that I would have 10PM showtimes available right now. Now I'm up to 9PM

having seen Us, I think WoM will be very good, probably not as good as Get Out's tho but good enough to pull a 200M domestic total from a 70M+ opening.

and I feel like comparisons to A Quiet Place may be a bit redundant as one is an R-rated and the other is PG-13.

I don't want to jinx this my boys, but SLOP's "biggest original OW" record might (keyword here, everything has to go right, but I definitely didn't say that last week) be going down.

Ah. Ok. I see. So Us just went crazy on Fandango today.

Well, I have no idea how presale heavy it will be, so I’m not even going to project anything numberswise, but I think we have a fun weekend thread ahead of us.

Holy FUCK at those Fandango comps

guess we know the trick to selling horror is to incorporate creepy remixes of songs you wouldn’t associate with horror. Can’t wait for the next Blumhouse joint to hit us with an eerie rendition of Shania Twain and “Any Man of Mine”

Spring break and nothing good came out last week and this movie has stellar reviews thus far. Clearly my sub 60 prediction is a fail but I'm curious to see how good those pre sale comps correlate to OW. They indicate a 100+ opening, we shall see.

I have no clue about the others, but I know that for A Quiet Place, around 90% of its tickets were sold day-of, which is why that one comp looks so crazy. The horror genre, in general, seems to skew towards late ticket purchases, but I think with Jordan Peele and the hype for the Get Out followup, Us is leaning a lot more into the pre-sales. I still think the opening will be massive and overperform, but I'm not sure about the "pure insanity" OW numbers yet.

CoolEric258 to Marvel fans:  I've suffered for my music tracking, now it's your turn.

(No-Prize to anyone who recognizes the reference WITHOUT looking it up ;))

Since tomorrow will be all about Us and Endgame is looming on Friday, I'll just answer this now:

From Rutland Weekend Television I give you, one of the best protest songs of all time:

Make sure you turn the sound way up to get the full glory of the experience.

Spoiler

Monty Python fans on this board should have recognized the line, BTW.

SHAME SHAME SHAME gif etc. :sadno:

Well, that's the rumor. Still not confirmed, hence "looming".  But the rumor passes the smell test, IMO.

Find out soon enuf.

Can't believe BOPro is sticking with an opening lower than 60M. At this point, with the HUGE presales, HUGE awareness, HUGE reviews, GREAT moment for the genre and GREAT release schedule (no new competition, last horror movie released months ago), we are going to witness a stellar OW

Don't have a clue where it will land, but 60M+ is certain. And I wouldn't be surprised with 100M

Thanks for all the numbers...if I was picking a "best" comp, I do like the Venom or Deadpool 2 ones the best, just b/c this does have more of a presale factor than regular horror AND we've been adding more and more reserved seating the last few months (so more and more reason to buy, thus skewing into a more presale heavy movie than a regular horror from last year)...

I'm gonna stay with $60M+ just b/c we've seen a lot of presale heaviness lately that didn't quite lead those openers to open as high as we thought...better to be wildly happy after the weekend than disappointed, but I'm rooting for this film:)...

Now, last weekend, we did finally have 2 films beat tracking by $5M (which was an enormous % for their expected OW), so I'm not as worried about tracking being pretty low for this movie...since tracking isn't perfect:)...(last week, BOP had Us at $48M and Deadline has it this week at $45-$50M)...

One thing to consider is that at least near me the US screenings that are selling the fastest are the premium ones: Dolby, Imax, etc.

I should mention that as much as I would love $100M or above SLOP, we should not melt down if this ends up doing only around $60M. No matter what happens, this is vastly overperforming and shows the immense POWAH of Peele. For me, the main goal is passing Avatar's OW for the biggest live-action original opening
