The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Recommended Posts

I’m not expecting much for Shazam but i’m not too worried of its performance in the US for two reasons that others have pointed out...

1.It has already earned 3.3M from these early screenings and those would probably go to previews and OD figures in any other case since I can only imagine that fans are mostly attending these screenings.

2.It has been marketed as a family film and these tended to be light on presales and thrive on walk ups.

It’s the OS numbers that have me worried.WoM does not seem as good as is it is in the US.

Infinity War is the most hyped; EG benefits from the finale factor no doubt, otherwise it would suffer similar fatigue to CIVIL WAR no doubt.

Tough to say how high it will go but Thursday looks to be officially CRAY BIZ, though TBH they shroud really count this towards Thursday and not opening weekend..

I don't have AQP's Thur numbers and only have my guesstimate for Wed but it looks to have fallen well behind AQP for now.   Horror though is a very late seller so we should know better late afternoon

A Quiet Place    (Mon) 2,177   (Tues)  4,003    (Wed) 10,665

A Quiet Place is not a great comparison to Pet Semetary.

I don't think so either.  It's a King re-make not an original work so it's pre-sales should be more frontloaded

It's the comp though I was specifically asked for.

It is far better than US.

AQP was a bit front-loaded (for an original movie) during the OW, generating 11.7x from previews.

US was a different beats, it generated a 9.7x which is almost unheard of for an original Horror movie and it’s almost the same multiple that IT generated, despite grossing half the previews, and not having a storm hurting the weekend.

Considering that PS has nowhere the same buzz/urgency as US, I would say it will play much more similar to AQP than to US during the OW.

Pet Sematary: 1,986
CM: 1,007

It might have a better preview to o/w ratio but I meant front loaded in that the pre-sales seemed to have started well for it but didn't build as much during the week compared to AQP

If any one can pull the fandango numbers for Thur for AQP, Glass, US and Hereditary that would be great since all we'll have are Mon & Thur full numbers for comps

Fandango App Monday Tues Wed Thursday
A Quiet Place 2,177 4,003 10,665
Hereditary 659 1,178 3,181
The Nun 2,082 5,938 13,806 28,881
Overlord 299 605 1,599 4,522
Glass 3,106 3,978 6,478 17,810
US 10,742 13,597 27,634 39,514

SK’s fanbase

Stephen King's fanbase has seen like literally a hundred different adaptations of his work.

A new movie based on a SK book is absolutely nothing special.

That said, if this movie is good, horror fans will go see it and support it.

As much as I missed Pulse, today the counting was frustrating. I think Avengers: Endgame is still distracting way too much attention from the rest of the films to get normal results.

Pulse 8:50-9:04 EST:

Shazam!: 175/15 minutes – Captain Marvel (153.4M OW) had 859/15 same day and daytime
Pet Sematary: 105/15 – Escape Room (18.2M OW) had 36/15, Us (71.1M OW) 404/15, both same day and time of the day. I have no Halloween numbers (76.2M OW) because I was dumb enough not to count this movie on Thursday back then but Halloween's Wednesday number was 158/15 and extrapolated onto its Pulse whole day number - it jumped 67% from Wednesday to Thursday - would mean Halloween had ca. 264/15 on Thursday at that time; so compared to Halloween (probably the best movie for comparisons) it looks quite good for PS
The Best of Enemies: 11/15

And Pulse 10:35-10:49 EST:

Shazam!: 322/15 minutes – Captain Marvel had around 1.500/15 same day and time of the day; that seems low for Shazam but OTOH it doubled its sales in less than two hours. As I said above, probably Avengers: Endgame is still to blame but more and more fans of Shazam seem to appear at Pulse
Pet Sematary: 152/15 – Escape Room had 80/15, Us 717/15, both same day and time of the day; compared to ER it would have ca. 35M OW, compared to (the very presales-heavy) Us it would only get 16M; I still see it closer to 25-30M given these strange couting circumstances and also because of the good reviews
The Best of Enemies: 23/15 – also a good improvement in only two hours but still a bit muted

Yeah, but you need to take in account that AQP had weaker presales before the release week, it had more room to increase than a movie that had better presales.
